2026 5A Predictions

What is your rationale behind Graves being #2?

I would put Graves at the #2 spot as well.  Graves is returning almost their entire team this season and Madisonville and Apollo both have to come to them.  Graves was really young last season and the improvement from week 1 to week 11 was really good.  They took Madisonville to OT and lost to Apollo by 7 and had an opportunity to win both of those games on the road.  From what I have seen on social media and heard from other people they have gotten after it in the weight room and have some extremely strong kids as well as very good athletes.

What would be the reasons why you wouldn't have Graves at #2?

Everyone talking about coming in 2nd in this district. Owensboro should win this district.

I think its a pretty well known fact that Owensboro is the clear cut favorite in the district.  The spot for 2nd is what is really up for grabs at the moment and a more intriguing conversation.

I’m not ready to make any predictions yet. Graves returns a lot, and I was really impressed with their defensive line last season. I think the trenches will ultimately decide the Apollo/Graves/Madisonville matchups this year, but I still need to learn more about all three teams before making any real calls.

Apollo does return three key starters on the offensive line, along with a sophomore who gained valuable experience stepping in for injured players throughout last season. A lot will depend on how Max Johnson develops and performs this year, because I think he’s the difference-maker that could give Apollo the edge over teams like Graves and Madisonville, and against their non district matchups like Murray and OC.

Defensively, Apollo handled Graves pretty well last year, but Graves also had a lot of answers on defense themselves. You’re right though — that long drive will definitely play a factor, so it’ll be interesting to see how things shake out.

Yes I think we will win D1. If we had to play you guys at Graves instead of Rash I would say the game would be a lot closer like it was last year.

If the Red Devils don’t win their district, hell might freeze over right there at Rash Stadium!

I think Graves returns the most of anybody in the district and will have 6-7 OL returning with multiple starts under the belt.  All of the offensive production is back along with a few returning from season ending injuries that are difference makers.  They will have to replace the 3 DL and 1 outside backer but Graves finding guys to play on defense usually isn't an issue.  I wouldn't overlook this team who's playing with a chip on their shoulder.

Owensboro did what they wanted to Apollo and MNH, Graves had a really good run defense. Those 3 played each other really good, and as @zoneblitz24 says they get them at home.  As @theguru asked, Ithink Owensboro is A favorite with Wofo and Scott.  Mix in BG resurgence, Pulaski and Atherton.

I would say we should win 5-A. Nothing is a guarantee. As long as we stay healthy we should bring back another title. WoFo does return a lot back and I do believe Apollo and Graves will fight for 2nd. I just don’t see Madisonville beating Apollo or Graves.

Our goal at Owensboro this year is to win state but to also beat one of the Louisville schools on our schedule. If we accomplish this I think we can be in that top 10 maybe 5 programs in the state.

Who would you guys think we have a better chance to beat St X or CAL?

In a vacuum I would say St. X but sometimes there are other factors that figure into the games.

We do play X at Rash and the atmosphere can be electric. So we will see what happens

From what I have seen from X over the last two or three years you really never know what you are going to get in a big game.  But, new coach, new X.

Is it August yet?

It’s going to be really hard to fill the shoes of the Hampton twins and Muster along with some other pretty solid seniors from this past season. But in saying that I think this year’s team has the potential to be as good or better than last years team(on paper). All of our WR’s return. One of the best MLB’s in the state, 3 of our Starting DB’s and the QB returns. Another potential future Mr Football candidate coming up in RB Gavin Walker…. Does that automatically equate to winning 5A? I’m not sure but I hope it does.

I like Owensboro a lot this year.

When does Scott County knock down the proverbial wall?
