This matchup pits two potentially stalking horse candidates to win the state as part of the "pod of death", and two teams that have achieved dynasty status in their regions.

Warren Central is no stranger to the Sweet 16.  After a year away, they return after claiming their seventh region title in nine years, 16th in the last 25 seasons, and 20th overall. They won the 2004 and 2023 state titles.  This appearance came easier than most, as they had their largest margin of victory in a region final since 2006, and third largest of those 20 titles.  That was reflective of most of the year in their region, as aside from a very surprising upset loss at Bowling Green, every single game Warren Central played against 4th Region competition was won by double digits.  The postseason has showcased their greatest strength - defense.  Four of the five postseason games they've played so far, Warren Central has held their opponent to fewer than 40 points.  The only one they didn't, they gave up a mere 46.  They are allowing 37.5 PPG in their last six games, just 50.1 PPG on the season.  The Dragons are battle tested as well, boasting a 5-1 record over teams that made the Sweet 16, with their lone loss coming at the hands of St. X in the King of the Bluegrass.  Offensively, Central is very balanced, as no player on the team averages above 11.4 PPG.  That would be Kaleb Prince, a second team all-region selection, whose uncharacteristic three point shooting (four makes) in the region final fueled their victory.  Junior Armani Byrd is one of the highest rated players in his class, also contributing 11.2 PPG.  No other Dragon averages in double digits, with Dominique Anthony (9.9 PPG), Karaun Johnson (8.3 PPG), and Jeremiah McCombs (6.9 PPG) their next highest scorers.  The Dragons have a 2-0 record all-time against North Laurel, but have not played them since 2003.  They did play their rival South Laurel in the 2005 Sweet 16 title game, a 72-59 South Laurel victory.

The current North Laurel dynasty has seen them win the 13th Region four times in five years, and they are into their fifth Sweet 16, adding the 2012 appearance to those.  They have the advantage of this being their second year in a row, so they should have the experience edge at Rupp Arena.  Last year also marked their first victory in a Sweet 16 appearance, when they took down Breathitt County before falling in a three point decision to Montgomery County in the quarterfinals.  Seven players of the current eight man rotation that North Laurel employs saw time in those Sweet 16 games, including four starters.  None are more significant than Mr. Basketball candidate Reece Davidson.  Davidson had 77 points combined in the two games last year, and averaged 20 points per game through this season's first 33 games.  Davidson can score from anywhere, shooting 54.9% from the floor, and 42.1% from three.  Sophomore Corey Cunagin also averages in double digits, putting up 11.2 PPG.  Cunagin leads the team in field goal percentage among those who have attempted more than 10 shots, hitting a staggering 67% of his shots from the floor.  He's not exclusively a post either, judicious in his attempts from three, but shooting 15/33 from deep for 45.5%.  Jordan Rawlings (9.5 PPG), Cooper Elza (9.0 PPG), and Kaiden Allen (8.9 PPG) are also significant scorers.  Like Warren Central, North Laurel can lock down on defense.  They held two opponents under 40 points in the region tournament, and no opponent has topped 46 on them in the postseason.  Their average allowed sits at almost precisely 50 PPG (50.03). They went 4-2 against the Sweet 16 field, and played a few other contenders that fell short, such as Daviess County, Bryan Station, and Frederick Douglass, so they are also quite battle tested.

On paper, Warren Central is favored.  The majority of the human polls have them rated ahead, and the Massey Ratings have them as the 8th team overall, and North Laurel as 16th.  In looking at the team composition and experience factors, I see this as a virtual coin flip.  North Laurel seems to have a slight size advantage in totality, and Davidson is by far the best scorer on either team, and a big to go with it.  Plus, they have experience at Rupp.  Warren Central may be slightly deeper, and likely plays at a faster pace than North Laurel, so they will look to speed up play.

Who ends up winning the day?

Never a bad year when your season ends at Rupp! Glad to see the team bounce back from last seasons region tournament upset.

I'd love to see Ryan Davidson take over again and make a run like he did last year. Heck of a player.

I like the contrast of WC's balance versus Reece Davidson. I look for the Dragons to contain Davidson well enough to force the other Jags to beat them.

Give me Warren Central in a nip and tuck battle from start to finish.

Can't wait for this one. What a double header we have on Wednesday! First time seeing Warren Central.

I doubt if NL can keep up with WC.  WC could be the sleeper in this tournament.

Monster, two handed dunk by NL, they lead 2-0.

Central hasn’t found the touch inside the arc yet.

And still up 12-9!

Cameron Mills and Scott Thompson on the call.  I think I have that right.

If NL will get the ball down low to Davidson, WC is going to be in trouble.

Good competitive game at the end of 1.

13-12 NL
