I certainly understand this logic and agree that the best alternative would be to win both!! However for the sake of this discussion, I think the All "A" is a much tougher accomplishment than winning the region. Simple math would say it's tougher to be the best of 120 teams vs. the best of 16!! Seeing how most regions tend to be dominated by a few larger powers, when an "A" team has one of their great teams, it only takes a slightly "off" year by a couple teams for them to break through and win the region--Timing plays a great part in this. On the other hand, to win the All "A" you've got to survive the region and then win four games in four days, against the best of an original field of 120 teams!!

 

It would be nice to have to revisit this thread in a few weeks, with the perspective from both sides!!

I would say Region just for the chance to say you played at rupp, and you are one of the top 16 schools in the state.

 

We all know that's a huge misnomer!! No way a regional winner is necessarily one of the best sixteen teams in the state, as many regions boast several top twenty teams, while others are very weak comparitively. (See the 7th & 11th this year) You are mearly the winner of a region, and many times the benefactor of the luck of the draw!! Lots of first and second round regional losers would breeze through other regions. The All "A" champion is every bit as much a champion (at least of 120 A schools), as the winner of the Sweet Sixteen!! Much tougher feat in my opinion, although both are remarkable accomplishments for the smaller schools!!

Exceptions to every rule, and I agree an A school winning the 7th or 11th this year, would be a HUGE (or even larger) accomplishment!! Conversely, in several regions, you'll find A schools among the top contenders?? Outside of the Louisville/Lexington regions I would even say its rather common??

Generally, I rate winning the All A Classic state title as the equivalent of winning one of the better regionals ... not the 6th, 7th and 11th, but more around the middle of the pack.

When I was in school a chance to play at Rupp ment everything and that was our goal throughout. An all a championship would have been great but after that we had one main goal and that was competing for a region title. I never did eighter of the two by the way but If I had to choose it would be a regional title and a chance to play in the big show. I don't regreat not winning an all a title in HS but everytime I pick up a basketball I think of what it would have been like to play at Rupp in the state tournament in front of 20,000 fans and i'm sure hundreds of athletes in KY that never had the oppertunity feel the same way. A feat that so many teams thrive to achieve, and the ones who do can cherish it their whole lives.

I have to agree. I played at an "A" school. We didn't win our region for the All "A" and didn't get to play at Richmond (EKU). However we won our regular region and made it to RUPP. Talk about being treated like a king. We played terrible during that stretch (All "A" Regional) but we were a completely different team win the regionals came around. Senior dominatedball club and we just didn't want to stop playing basketball. When we won our first round game in the Sweet 16 and made it to 8, nothing compared to anything that we ever saw in my career. So I have to go with the region.
