Open Job: Scott - Dustin Trimnell named head coach (Not Official)

I think the writing is pretty clearly on the wall that it’s Trimnell. It’s already been reported that he’s been on campus, so if that’s the case, an official statement almost feels like a formality at this point….pointless.

And Trimnell is the perfect hire. Young, hungry and something to prove. No one expects anything of Scott and Trimnell. That’s why the pair together is perfect. He’s shown he can take a program that was in a really rough spot and make it respectable again just look at what he did at Bellevue. If he’s given time, resources, and real community support, I genuinely believe he can flip the program completely. I’d expect 3–4 wins in year one, 5+ the following season, and by years four or five, they should be competing with the likes of Cooper.

While I agree that I think Trimnell is a good hire for Scott. I can’t really agree with saying he has shown he can take a program that it was in a rough spot and make it respectable again. Chad Montgomery has shown that, and while Trimnell was a very good DC and a part of that turn around, he has not shown he can do that yet as the head man. However, he definitely deserves that chance based off his work as a DC, as I love seeing more schools being willing to give young coaches a chance lately to be a head coach.

As for him completely flipping Scott around and have them competing with Cooper for district titles, that I have a hard time seeing. Not because I don’t think he will do well. I think he will do well, but I’m not sure if that would happen in even 5 years.  As even when Scott was last good, the main reason why they were competing for district titles was cause their district was weak in 4A and was basically between them and Holmes. I think it will take longer than 5 years for them to compete for district titles if the district stays the same. I hope I am wrong on that, as it would be awesome to see Scott competing with at that type of level.

I don't disagree with any of this. I think Coach Chad would probably give Coach Trimnell all the praise he could but at the end of the day if bellevue failed it was on his shoulders and not his assistant coaches as much. From what I understood Trimnell was a local guy not sure if he went to bellevue or if he went to maybe Dayton or someplace like that, I do know bellevue had a Trimnell on the roster so maybe he was more invested to the outcome than most other assistant coaches would have been but let's no get it mistaken Coach Chad shouldered the burden if the program would have folded like in previous years.

I also agree with the timeline competing with the likes of Cooper within the next 5 years is a big ask for a guy that's taking over a program that hasn't won more than 4  games in a season since 2021 which was the time they had winning season. I would say give it time be patient and I'm sure he will put the work in that gets the program headed in a different direction.

How long has it been stated publicly here that it's Trimnell? A month? What is the delay in the announcement?

Please, please do not give me the February 1 hogwash story when there are coaching announcements happening daily.

The Kenton County Superintendent is not a sports guy. Sports are not a priority for Central Office. Places where that's not the case don't care about the rules. KCSD does. I believe Boone has been following the same process and rules.

I did some digging. Scott announced their last two hires also on Feb 1. This is not new. SK named Wynn early 1/9/25, but he had started a teaching job in the building right away; Trimnell has not. Dixie didn't announce Burke until 2/1/22 when they hired him. Boone announced Court 3/14/24, and Ryle announced Englert 2/1/14.

KCSD has made it clear that they will not violate the Feb 1 rule. The weight room is open, kids are working, and for all I know, Trimnell might be around. But the rule is the rule, whether anyone else follows it or not. Scott's Athletic Dept gets a lot of heat, and I would deem most of it unnecessary.

I honestly think in both Scott and Conner, it is the district itself forcing the Feb 1 date. Which makes zero sense, so no other districts follow that rule. However, for some reason both Boone and Kenton County districts are.

It isn't a Kenton County rule - unless Simon Kenton broke it last year.

Let’s be honest no one is going to Scott basketball games just for fun. You’re there because you’re an alum, you have a kid in the school or on the team, or you’re directly connected to the program in some way.

I also get why Scott wants to follow the process exactly as written. There’s no real downside for them. It’s not like out of district families are sitting around waiting on an official announcement before

1.) Might be more people than you think who show up and support Scott just to be there without any of following listed. Basketball program is a consistent program for Scott along with other ones.

2.) Kenton Co. has open enrollment, timing is critical sometimes. However, there possibly are out-district or in-district families who are waiting for a confirmation. Parents will put their kid in the best opportunity for their success.

Scott is taking the heat but regardless when they announce, they were just the first one to post before everyone. Frustration part for everyone, is all the jobs that posted after them have now all filled, regionally with the exception of Connor.

The deadline to apply for Open Enrollment for next school year was January 9.  Don't expect the district to budge on this with all the new homes being built all over the county.  So Scott won't be getting any Open Enrollment kids after the official announcement is made.

Why do you deem it unnecessary?  They are on Head football coach # 5 in 5 seasons.  That heat is well deserved IMHO.

Comical. KC is comical by itself. Don't know If this will workout for Scott. Would like to be wrong but this isn't 1A football. Good luck DT.

You may have already said this, as I don't want to go back through all the pages on here. However, your comment about this not being 1a football suggest you are not a fan of the hire. So I am curious on who you think they should have hired then? As their last few hires didn't come from 1A football, and were guys with head coaching experience, and those hires didn't work out either.

The last guy was a failed car salesman that they hired, we all see how that worked out. The other guys I can't truly speak on other than either they left/moved etc. Going from playing Ludlow, Newport, all those 1a schools every week to having to play a Campbell County, Dixie, Cooper, Conner you name it is a huge step up. I don't think he'll have much success in Year 1 or maybe 2? Someone on here said it best, if the parents can be patient with him and if he's a good man and sets the example Taylor Mill and Scott will support him. Doesn't matter what I think of the hire, sure that's evident but I am wishing him good luck he's gonna need to hit the ground running come Monday or Tuesday.

That number is not accurate, first of all. Turner was at Scott until 2023. Then the Owen hire— which any reasonable person would have seen as a good hire, with crazy extenuating circumstances. Hensley filled in in the interim, and then Franklin. Franklin wasn’t working out, they moved on. (One of my sources tells me that wasn’t a Scott decision; that came from the District.)

Given the parameters they’re working in, they’re doing fine. Overall? Scott’s athletic program is solid.

Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer have all been in the state final 4 in the last 10 years.

Football is the outlier. But Owen’s been in two state title games back in Florida. Who’s to say that doesn’t happen here?

How are my numbers wrong on the number of coaches?  You listed Turner, Owens, Hensley, and Franklin.  Now, Trimnell.  That's quite literally 5 coaches in 5 seasons.

Look, I'm sure the people running Scott's Athletic Dept. and School are fine people. Having 5 head football coaches in 5 years deserves heat. Saying otherwise is being disingenuous.

The previous coaches are all 1a or 2a coaches. Outside of the Beechwoods and other top teams in the state in 1a and 2a. There is a clear difference between 1a/2a and 5a football. Coaching against 5a teams is a whole different animal. While I hope for the best, it will definitely be an "Oh Crap" moment when friday nights come around.

I get what you’re saying, and I don’t think you’re wrong about the jump from 1A/2A to 5A being real. That’s a different weekly grind, different depth, different margin for error. Friday nights in 5A don’t give you much time to figure things out on the fly, and that part is definitely an adjustment.

That said, if I’m not mistaken, when he was at NewCath they played (or at least prepared for) teams like CAL, Belfry, Conner, Cooper, Roger Bacon, Pikeville, Paintsville, KCD, Beechwood, Scott, Campbell County, and Lou Desales . They also scrimmaged Cov Cath some of those years. Even if he wasn’t the head coach, you’d have to assume being part of game planning and weekly prep for that level of competition still matters. Preparing a 1A or 2A roster to survive games like that teaches you something, especially about structure, discipline, and how small mistakes get exposed by bigger, faster teams.

Bellevue’s schedule obviously wasn’t elite, but I don’t buy the idea that you come away from those years without picking up things that translate especially on the defensive side. Schemes, preparation habits, and how you build a week don’t magically change just because the class does. The athletes do, but the coaching fundamentals still apply.

For me, the biggest question isn’t the past it’s the staff. Who he surrounds himself with will tell us a lot. I’ve also heard he’s reached out to Perrin more than once, but with Perrin applying elsewhere, that feels like a long shot. Still, if he can build a staff with guys who’ve been in 5A trenches before, that eases a lot of concerns.

I’m with you though there will be an “oh crap” moment once the lights come on. That’s unavoidable. But I do hope it works out. Taylor Mill is a good community, and it’d be nice to see Scott have something to be excited about again in the fall. Sometimes it doesn’t start with instant wins it starts with laying a foundation that actually holds.

I'll respond, you seem to know a lot about this guy. Do you know him personally? Sounds like ole Dustin is going to clear house of former staff members, which means he'll hire a new staff. Also out of those 12 teams you mentioned weren't those games on Coach Lickert & coordinators and not Dustin? Curious on what you think there. Also, Bellevue any of their wins come against teams with winning records? Again I'm just asking questions because you seem to be in the know, if you are kudos to you. If you know the guy personally I said yesterday and say it again I wish the man good luck.
