I don’t know him personally. The only connection I have is that he coached my nephew at NewCath, and I honestly only ever heard good things from that experience. I also know that Coach Lickert thought highly of him, as did Coach Schneider and others on that staff. I couldn’t tell you exactly how much of the weekly game planning fell on him specifically, but I do know that staff was very collaborative and everyone was involved in how things were prepared and executed.

As far as Bellevue goes, I live in Bellevue, so I saw that situation up close. That program was about as close to dead as you can get before Coach Montgomery took over. When you’re trying to revive something from near non-existence, you usually don’t jump straight into scheduling the top of the food chain. The goal is to rebuild confidence, numbers, and culture first. I also know Coach Montgomery has publicly said more than once on his own Facebook how important it was for him to bring Coach Trimnell onto his staff, which says something in itself.

Were there a lot of wins against teams with winning records? Probably not many. But context matters. Even this past year, look at Holy Cross they came off a few down years, scheduled themselves very strategically, played only three teams with .500 or better records, and won 10 games. Bellevue was one of those three. That doesn’t take anything away from Holy Cross, it just shows that scheduling is part of rebuilding.

I don’t know Coach Trimnell well enough to call him Dustin, and I’m not pretending to be “in the know.” I’m just looking at it from the outside and trying to be fair about the circumstances. Like I said before, I hope he does well for the Taylor Mill community, and I think a lot will depend on who he’s able to surround himself with on staff. If that piece comes together, it gives him a real chance.

I know Coach Trimnell personally, and he’s always based his relationships on trust and accountability. He genuinely cares about the people around him, and that’s something that comes through in everything he does. My kids always looked forward to being part of teams he was involved with, and I heard the same from other parents and friends whose kids played for him. The feedback was always positive, and it was clear the players enjoyed being there and felt supported.

Coach Trimnell does things the right way. He sets clear expectations and holds kids to a consistent standard, regardless of the situation. He expects effort, discipline, and accountability, and he doesn’t shy away from that. Football is a huge part of who he is, but it’s never been about him—it’s about the kids and helping them grow through the game.

Wins matter and everyone wants success, but what stands out most to me is the type of young men he helps develop. I think the Taylor Mill and Scott communities are going to be really happy with not just the direction of the program, but the kind of people it produces. He’s a good football coach, but an even better man.

Football is football. I have watched 1A and 2A teams beat the snot out of 4A, 5A and 6A teams. Scott, if they are smart will be playing a lower level competitive non-district schedule. If they beat Boone County, they are in the playoffs. There is no reason why Scott should not be able to schedule several 6-4/7-3 seasons to build momentum. Dixie, Conner, Boone and Cooper all play kids both ways and have similar player numbers to Scott. Coaching against 5A teams with a 5A team will not be the barrier some are suggesting. Having the creativity to navigate a small roster with no depth is far more challenging than competing against 5A teams with a 5A roster..

I think you all are overselling the the challenges of coaching going from a small school to a big school. At the end of the day it is still football, and it is still X and O's and being able to teach it, develop players, establish a culture, etc. Quite honestly coaching at a small school like a Bellevue is can possibly be even more challenging than coaching at a big school. As you have less players, less talent, and usually have to play players at positions they probably don't fit best at, but because of numbers you have to use them there. Then having to be creative to find a scheme that best works for those players.  At the end of the day one of the biggest things that determines how much you win, is the talent you have. 

You mention how many wins came against teams with winning records? If I had to guess not many, but based off what they were working with should they have won any of those games against teams with winning records? Probably not? Especially when you consider their best player transferred to Simon Kenton before the season. The majority of the time the team with more talent does win. Its when the talent is pretty even on both sides, when coaching really plays a big factor. 

If you are a good coach, that jump isn't going to be a huge thing, because it is still football. You now also will have more talent to work with, while also going against teams that also have more talent. We have seen coaches make that jump from a small school to big schools and be successful. Stephen Lickert made the jump from Dayton, to Holmes when Holmes was still a rather big school and was successful. Joe Wynn made the jump from Newport to Mason County and was successful. Randy Borchers made the jump from Ludlow to Cooper, and had Cooper in a state title game 4 years later. Coaching is still coaching no matter what level you are at. 

Now being at a bigger school it will be important for him to put a good staff around him, and the biggest thing is getting the culture established to where players want to be at Scott and not go elsewhere. As getting talent to stay there is ultimately going to be the key in how successful any coach would do there. It probably won't be pretty this first year, as they just lost some good players, including a very good QB. Quite honestly at best it may be just 3 or 4 wins at most this year, and that is best, as it could be even less. However, as someone else mentioned if they beat Boone County this year, they will be in the playoffs for the first time in years. So even something as simple as that would be something good to build off of.
