  • Owensboro/Henderson first played in 1895 and (with the exception of 1898, 1899, 1901, and 1902) every year thereafter until the new Henderson Co High School opened in the mid-1950s.

Owensboro comfortably.

When is the last time Henderson County beat Owensboro in football?  On Friday nights that is.

Colonels had a 4game win streak against the Devils from 11’-14’. Devils have been on a 9 game win streak against them since

Does anyone know the proper lineage of this rivalry?

The old Henderson High/Owensboro rivalry can be traced back to the late 1800s. The County/Owensboro series has been going on since 1957, with the Red Devils leading 35-24.

I'm assuming there's a break in the lineage somewhere?

Thanks. Was Henderson a completely different school than Henderson City?

My understanding is that the names Henderson and Henderson City were used interchangeably to refer to Barret Manual Training High School, which (along with segregated Douglass High School) was the public high school operated by the Henderson City Board of Education.  Henderson Senior High School/Henderson City High School replaced Barret in the mid-1950s and Douglass merged into Henderson City High School in the mid-1960s.  In the mid to late 1970s, the Henderson City Board of Education merged with the Henderson County Board of Education, leaving a single public high school now known as Henderson County High School.

My maternal grandfather graduated from old Barrett Manual Training High School (aka Henderson High) in '46. I have a program from his senior season ('45) & they played Owensboro then. I don't recall him ever talking about a break/no season during WWII. So, if not then? I'm not sure if ever?

Also, while he was playing for the Purple Flash? Their Head Coach? Frank Camp, who left for the University of Louisville job in '46 (I believe). But, some of my grandpa's teammates? The late, great(s) Mojo Hollowell (Coach Hollowell and my grandfather both started at Guards), Shorty Jamerson (RB at UK under Bear Bryant, scored both TD's in their '51 Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma) and their starting varsity QB, as an 8th grader? (WKU coach/legend) Jimmy Feix.

This seems to match what I can cross reference from playing Bowling Green as well, although I don't think they used the names interchangeably.

Henderson High School played Bowling Green from 1935 to 1950 every season.

Henderson City High School played Bowling Green from 1954 to 1959 every season.

Then Henderson County High School's first game with Bowling Green was the 1976 Regional Final at Henderson County where they defeated BG 7-3.

Big Rivalry game - Hendo always has athletes and their lines are farm-boy big.  They want to muddy the game up.  I think they may keep it close for a half then O takes over and wins handily.  O 42-21
