I would have thought without the Mueller years Cov Cath would have a formidable lead? I guess in the 60s and 70s Cov Cath was just getting started might be the factor. In the 80s and post Mueller feels like Cov Cath would be on top significantly.

@cowboy90 isn't wrong, but I think the current junior class split as freshman when Cov Cath was starting a (good) linebacker at QB.

Regardless - I think Cov Cath will be around the same quality of team next year because they'll have the most talented QB they've had in awhile throwing to probably three future D1 players at Tight End (guys who are athletic enough to get varsity basketball PT as a freshman at one the best programs in the state at 6'2 plus have good film don't go lower than FCS - talking about Cash Myers) plus likely future G5+ WR Brandon Smith and WR Mac Cogswell who will probably play NAIA/D2 if he wants, but will have a monster senior season with how fast he is. 

Line will be better since Johnny Lind and Landon Robinson (been injured most of his sophomore season) will be year older and they are probably two of the three or four most talented linemen since Eviston has gotten there. 

They also slow the pace down and play guys both ways so you only need 3 studs per class and maybe 4 or 5 role players and if those guys fit well class over class - you can put together a really nice team, which I think they'll have.

So what I get from this is:

1. Your saying Cov Cath is lacking right now in important positions 

2. You have now succumbed to the fact that Cov Cath needs to look forward to basketball season. I wish it would hurry up too!

The football program's first year was '67, and aside from '68 & '69 when Cov Cath had a bevvy of athletic talent in the school** that pushed them into two decent season records in the football program's infancy, they didn't really see any success until the '81 season. There were a lot of hurdles early on for the football program. They had no home field (they played home games primarily at Holmes and occasionally at Ludlow), they had no practice field (they practiced at the field down by the old Devou Park incinerator at the bottom of Montague & Sleepy Hollow Road, which was notably not level with its fairly hard slope from side to side and needed to be walked over before every practice to collect any broken glass, bottlecaps, and empty cans that had made its way there), and they also went through 4 head coaches in the first 8 seasons, so continuity was non-existent until Lynn Ray took over as a 28 year old in 1975.

Most of the "Little Six"/NKAC coaches also made an agreement among themselves not to schedule Cov Cath for the first decade or so they had a team, just like they had with New Cath, who opted to play mostly in the GCL, which they were actually a member of for many years. They were sore about the fact that private schools didn't have geographic school districts like they did. Boone County, Highlands and Holmes were the most notable exceptions to the boycott. Lloyd & Newport also agreed to play them a couple of times. Interestingly enough under the old playoff system during that period, the lack of competitors that Cov Cath could come up with in district kept them out of playoff eligibility in a few seasons even...like in '69 when they finished the regular season 8-2 with their only losses to Louisville St. X and Hamilton Badin. They beat both teams they played in NKY that year in Highlands & New Cath, but couldn't make the playoffs because they didn't have enough wins in district to qualify.

All that being said, the football program was tough sledding at Cov Cath for the first dozen years or so that the team was around. So when they started off in 1968 against a Highlands team that already had 53 years of football tradition in the tank, it took a good while to get up to speed compared to the Birds.


** There were 9 players on the '68 and '69 team who went on to play college football, 10 if you include Keith Stowers who was being recruited by a handful of D1 programs but was shot and killed trying to break up a fight after the football season ended his senior year. 4 of them went D1 and 3 of them went Ivy League. Cov Cath also had major athletes in the basketball program at that time (9th Region champs 1967-1971 and state runner up in 1967), the golf program (1969 state champs), and the baseball program (9th Region champs 1970)....so there was just a lot of athletic talent around the school at that point.

So while they’re losing Cash Harney - who is one of the best athletes in school history - and high schools studs Dylan Gaiser and Logan Sanning - all six future D1 (FBS or FCS) players in the program will all be a year older, bigger and more experienced. Dylan Countney at QB can be seven if he starts to fill out physically this off-season. 

Put that with a really good coach and they’re going to be right in it again.

But the numbers speak like @cowboy90 stated.

All the talk about next year and beyond has no bearing on the game tonight.  Curious to get some perspective on the special teams for each squad.  Outside of the first game, I think Highlands kicking game has been solid.  The return game, entirely different story.  Doesn’t appear to be much scheming going on, thus no real threat to crib one.

How about CovCath?

Tanner Robertson (the varsity soccer coach's son and a 4 year soccer letterman) has been handling most of the kickoff duties. He's been kicking a football for like all of 5 or 6 months now, so that considered, getting he's doing a solid job with most of his kicks pinned back inside of the 10. Kickoff coverage has been solid, with Beechwood notably not getting much on kick returns, even with Nathan Pabst and Tyler Fryman back to return. Pabst had two kickoff returns against us last year alone, and I don't think they returned a kickoff much further than the 20-25 yard line. Logan Zembrodt is a sophomore and has handled the PAT and FG duties and is doing great with it.

On returns, they've been having Dylan Gaiser handle punt return duties. We've faced at least two (maybe three?) teams who were doing rugby kicks/quick-kicks, so all-tolled he's had to fair catch a lot of punts thus far this season. Gaiser has also been deep on kickoffs, and I believe Zach Brooks, Gabe Weis and Mac Cogswell have all been switching off as the second deep man, but don't quote me on that. Gaiser returned the opening kickoff of the Elder game down to the 3 yard line and I think he had a return for touchdown called back on a holding call behind the play in the Simon Kenton game. We've had another couple of really nice returns out around midfield or further that came back on holding penalties this season, so that needs to be cleaned up. Cogswell also returned one kickoff for a touchdown in the Dixie game.
