I honestly don’t think your defense is bad. Dillard will do that to pretty much every team in KY. He’s probably the most underrated player in the state due to size. And Hampton well…. He didn’t get all those offers for no reason. Plus this could one of the most loaded Devils offense in decades…. Offensively y’all have the guys just need better QB play.

Nice pick by Mayfield - I only saw end so far.  Thx to mayfield love scrimmaging that great program.  Missing QB I believe and working a lot of players in..it will be good for both teams going into week 1.

I forgot those 2 are the real deal...just better offense than our defense not being too bad..

Good game to the Owensboro defense. I know Mayfield was missing their QB but the Red Devil’s starting defensive unit was impressive.

Owensboro looked good but it was also against a team that had their most experienced WR and DB playing exclusively QB. Mayfield looked like they have a lot to figure out. If they’re going to play Kirby at QB then they are taking away one of their top 2 WRs on offense by having him at QB. And they didn’t play him at DB where he is definitely the most experienced option they have there. He took way too long to get the ball out and took SEVERAL sacks, especially after throwing the interception on 1st down in the 1st qtr. Mayfield has ALOT of figuring out to do but once injuries settle I think they will be pretty good. Owensboro looked the part but I have seen at least one fan on here say that if they don’t get it done this year then it will be a long time before they have another chance. I honestly can’t see that team winning 5A, no low blow thrown there, just my honest opinion.

I think I’m one of the hardest fans to impress out there when it comes to the play of the Red Devils. But there were some things to be excited about tonight. From what I’m hearing OHS was missing at least 4 starters in this scrimmage. The QB was making his first varsity start. And the O-line, who was a big question mark coming into tonight’s scrimmage, played a pretty solid game overall IMO. And we all know what type of program Mayfield has so it wasn’t like it was some cupcake on the field tonight. Does this mean OHS is favored to win 5A?!?! Not at all. I think they’re ranked around 4th or 5th in the preseason 5A rankings by Maxpreps. And that’s about where they should be. It’s a long season but if the Devil’s stay healthy they will be a tough out for anyone in 5A in the playoffs. As far as the future….the kids that did most of the damage tonight for Owensboro were underclassmen. The QB’s a Junior. Wide Receiver #5 scored two TD’s. He’s a Sophmore. Wide Receiver #25 scored a TD. He’s a freshman. The DB’s that had INT’s will return. The inside LB #2 has multiple D1 offers. He’s a Junior. There’s nobody as good as Evan Hampton waiting to run the ball in the future but Owensboro, like Mayfield, has rarely wanted for quality running backs. Both programs will be fine.

that's why I said in a earlier post that I thought I heard we had a promising young QB coming so the kid that transferred to Graves was no big deal...I say play the freshman QB so you don't take away one of your best WR/DB...playing him makes him better in case of another injury to the starting QB...let a QB play QB no matter what year he is for the experience and allowing other players to play their natural positions...Sounds like Owensboro is gonna be Ok and Mayfield could have some concerns starting the season but as we know its how you finish...

Mind you Owensboro was without a top receiver(Morris), their best safety(Green) and their best OLB(Conrad). After they went up 35-7. Mayfield only scored on the JV defense. So I don’t think Owensboro gave their best shot. Offensively O is breaking in a brand new QB so there’s still some kinks to work out. Even then the offense basically did what they wanted against a pretty decent Mayfield defense. I think we have a great shot this year. I guess time will tell.

And the initial 7 Mayfield got was a pick 6.  I was very impressed with O’s defense even though no Conrad, and Green.

Well disregard my other comment because obviously I didn’t know much about Owensboro before reading you all’s comments. Didn’t know that this was the QBs first snaps; didn’t know they were missing some key contributors. That said, they have a rough first couple games but once the QB gets a couple games under his belt and some injuries go away O should be extremely tough.

Not sure what to think of this scrimmage. I'm cautiously optomistic, but on the other hand I think we are going to be just fine and will compete against X. One thing we can't do is be silly and shoot ourselves in the foot.

With that said, I think we can beat South Warren in the next scrimmage. We need Xavier Conrad and Chadyn Morris back.

I think looking towards the scrimmage with South and X games as actual indicators of where OHS is, is wise. I would argue that Mayfield seems to be WAY down, and, in a lot of ways.

A top Owensboro team should handle a very good Mayfield team. A top Owensboro team (as this year appears to be) should massacre a meh (by Mayfield standards) 1A Mayfield team.

These next two opponents are much closer to what Owensboro will have to be able to play with to have a chance to win 5A.

Mayfield could be down. But too many things in this scrimmage don't leave me to believe that is likely. No QB, didn't run England very much and several players were out, 4 to 5 starters. Not to say O doesn't have a nice team cause it does. Mayfield will have to get better to compete for a State Title. Owensboro will also need to get better to compete for a State Title. No team has ever won or lost anything in an early season scrimmage.
