Great Rivalry Game!

Lots of mistakes but lots of heart as well.
Good Season Red Devils.
BG on to the Regional Round.

Congrats purples go get another.

Congrats to the Purples. Haven't had a chance to watch them much this year. Can some of their faithful fill me in on if this was on the side of a good performance for BG or did they not play real well?

I don't mean that in a negative way I just thought they'd win a little more comfortably.

Eh. Yes and no. Penalties really hurt BG tonight. But it was a flag fest both ways so hard to really blame it all on that. It’s a rivalry game and you had to know Owensboro was going to leave it all out there after getting running clocked by BG in the regular season. I also expected a more convincing win but at the end of the day, be positive yet not satisfied with 27-14 and move on to the next. Plenty to improve on!

I know I’m biased but I think that had more to do with Owensboro playing their best game all season rather than BG not playing well. For the first time in the Deuce Bailey era the Devils were able to get pressure on him.

The Devils left it all on the field tonight. Feel as if Owensboro maybe even played better than BG for a good portion of the game but just not able to punch it in the end zone and put points on the board but the were driving up and down the field all second half….

Enjoy it Purples fans, go win state!

After I sent the message I kind of kicked myself because I made it sound disrespectful towards Owensboro which was not my intention. I think Owensboro played a heck of a game and TO's killed them! They definitely left it all on the field tonight!

it was more just based on previous performances that I didn't get to see and tonight's performance that I was hoping to get and idea of.

I think this is well said.  I feel Owensboro played 1,000% better tonight than in the regular season.  A part of that is Rash Stadium.  A part of that is O is a better team now than in the early part of the year.  They played with a lot of heart tonight and determination that simply wasn't there in Game 1 this season.

I will say that I'm still scratching my head at BG at the Owensboro 2 first and goal.  Then they burn 3 time outs and have to settle for a field goal up 14-0.  I still don't know how that happened.  If BG scores there it's 21-0 with about 3 minutes till halftime and kick it to anybody but Hampton and BG likely goes in up 3 scores.  BUT give O credit and they made it tough on BG to score and forced a FG, which amazingly gave Owensboro all the momentum which they used to drive down the field and punch in their first TD and make it a real game.  That was a big turn in the game!

Avid, I think Bowling Green is finding their offensive ways more difficult in the post season playing teams that they have faced a few times this year and many times over the past few seasons.  I think the opposing coaches in this case the Owensboro Coaches did a nice job watching film and mixing up what they did from the first game to this game.  And honestly I've never seen Owensboro play harder than they did tonight.  Did they turn the ball over too much?  Yep, but that doesn't mean they weren't giving it everything they had!  I think BG is fine, but playing your oldest Rival that wants to beat you desperately causes a less wide margin IMO.  Owensboro isn't chopped liver!  They are a very good football team.

Looking at the stats it looks like 310 to 270 BG.  O defense game plan was really good,  Great effort.  I was too hard on QB Delacey.  Yes a lot of mistakes, but the running game was shut down and it was up to him.  220 and 2 TD’s isn’t terrible and he had some great runs.  Dealing with a great jungle D from BG he still moved us down field.  Coaches good plan too, much better effort against a state champion team than early in the year.

Next year O should be loaded, move Hampton or Ashley to QB, Hampton at RB, Dillard,  I think Morris back.  Defense should be 1 year better and hopefully a good line.

Not the most popular statement to make right now but IMO, it’s true…

Hampton was underused in this game. I know Purples did great job holding him down

but…

First and goal and he doesn’t touch ball. Clearly D1 talent. Never sent him in motion, never put him in wildcat, never put him in a slot, never used him as a decoy or misdirection.

Iknow their last 7 or so opponents (which is a huge problem) wasn’t a deep run playoff caliber team but rushing 22 attempts vs Purples that are all basically “off tackle” is not going to cut it against a true contender.

There were 2 series I know where he never touches the ball. If playbook doesn’t open up for a kid like that, I’m not so sure that extra pages on the playbook even exists.

1600 yards rushing before game started is really misleading vs their competition. Not the kids fault. He’s a player. Just didn’t have an arsenal of different sets to try to get him on the sideline or in open field.

Totally, my opinion. If Owensboro goes to second or third round next season, it is going to have to be because they use Hampton in a variety of ways to get the young man on the sideline and/or open field.

I have watched Owensboro a couple times and I have always thought Hampton was not used correctly. That kid is special and you rarely see any creativity with the play calling.

I agree. Kinda reminds me of the Seahawks vs Patriots in the superbowl why not feed your best player 4 times with less than 5yards to go… But next year with Burk, Green, Dillard all play makers returning. I don’t think that much pressure will be on Hampton to make it to round 2 or 3 next yr. Getting other play makers involved will just open things up that much more for Hampton.
