Apollo (5-5) at South Warren (9-1)

The Eagles head south to take on the Spartans of South Warren.  This will be the 4^th meeting between the 2 schools with South Warren undefeated in the series.  They played in 2015, 2016 and 2018.  South won State Championships in 2015 and 2018, so it’s not surprising South won those or any of those games.  The Spartans earned the #2 RPI spot in 5A and will be hosting games until they lose or until they go to Lexington to play for a State Championship. 

Apollo Information

Eagles Coach John Edge has done a very good job this season and the Eagles have 3 more wins than last season and were MUCH more competitive in the games they did not succeed in.  They come in on a 2-game win streak crushing Marshall County and Daviess County.  And the Eagles should be on the uptick as they come calling to Nashville Road in Bowling Green this Friday Night.   

The Eagles leader is SO QB Maxwell Johnson who played very well this season throwing for over 1,700 yards with 14 TDs vs 9 INTs.  SR RB/WR Niles Board is one of the better players most have not heard of, but he has played very well with roughly 300 rushing yards and 8 TDs and nearly 500 yards receiving with another 5 TDs on the season.    

Defensively, SR Jamison Brown leads the way with 80 tackles and 4 sacks on the year.    

South Warren Information

South comes in this game on a 5-game win streak after blasting 4A Logan County 49-7.  South Warren is led by Star SR QB Byrce Button who has over 1,700 yards through 9 games with 26 TDs vs 8 INTs.  Jace Carter and Colton Veltcamp have been very capable WRs for South and each have 8 TDs on the year. 

Defensively, South is a very good unit with LB Brody Enslow leading the team with 61 tackles.  But 2-way star Colton Veltcamp has 10 sacks on the year, impressive.

Game Information

The game will be played at South Warren High School football field.  I expect Apollo to come and compete with all they have.  But it simply won’t be enough.  But I do like this Apollo squad and expect them to continue to improve, but finding a replacement for Board will be important for next season.  I don’t look for this game to be close into the second half.

I think this Apollo team has a chance to be one of the big first round upsets across the state. Apollo's defense will have to play their best game all year. They are young, but they have evolved to be a high scoring opponent offensively, averaging 30 ppg v.s. last season--- a mere 14 points a game. 

A healthy Apollo team that can eliminate mistakes early and capitalize on their big play maker abilities, can be a very dangerous team and could certainly upset this South Warren team on any given night.

Very unlikely but at the same time possible. Nobody gave Owensboro a chance last year against South Warren and look what happened… Apollo has the big play ability but it would take a perfect performance to pull that off and they haven’t played close to perfect game all year. Apollo is better than their 5-5 record though. Losing to the best OC Aces squad in history the first game of the season. Played with a BG squad for almost a half. Self inflicted wounds against 3 tough district opponents (that have all been in the 5A top 10 at some point this season). Injuries along with being young like you mentioned are what separate this Eagles squad from being 10-0. Future is looking bright for Apollo. But just not this week.

Very Interesting.... Hey, my Devils beat SW last year in the 2nd round. I think Apollo has a big mountain to climb though.

Good Luck to the Eagles this week. I hope they beat South Warren. I think they have a challenge ahead of them but I've seen Coach Edge beat teams they are not supposed to beat at OC and Apollo. 

This Apollo team has a punchers chance. Their QB Max Johnson has playmakers around him. If they get some stops they have a chance for the upset. 

IF this happens it will shake up the 5-A RPI for sure. 

Apollo has the talent to compete.  My concerns for the Eagles would be up front.  Can that offensive line for Apollo hold up against a great South Warren front?  Bryce Button and Veltcamp is another major concern.  I don't know that Apollo can score enough to keep up if it does turn into a track meet.  The Apollo secondary has been sound all season but they will need to be excellent to have any chance tonight.  If they can force a few turnovers and feed Niles Board, it could be interesting. There isn't any pressure on Apollo to win this game, so that could help them settle in early.  Coach Edge will no doubt have a good game plan.  Hopefully this will be a fun one to watch!
