If it meant no more EA Sports games. I'd strongly consider it.

Is that the best argument you have?

Is that the best argument YOU have?

The definition of golf according to The Free Dictionary is "a game played on a large open course with 9 or 18 holes; the object is use as few strokes as possible in playing all of the holes."

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary it's "a game in which a player using special clubs attempts to sink a ball with as few strokes as possible into each of the 9 or 18 successive holes on a course."

Notice that neither say "SPORT".

I don't really feel the need to argue further after GulfCoastTyrant's post. The only thing I would argue with his post is that golf does require training, essentially, but otherwise, I'm in line with him.

Nice try, but if you look up baseball, basketball, or football on both dictionaries, they all say game as well, with no sign of sport in sight. It only works if it follows suit the whole way. Check it all before making yourself look bad next time. :sssh:

Take this into account. How many games have governing bodies? How many sports?

At least in Golf you win and aren't judged.

Golf just lacks LOTS of SPORT attributes..training, endurance, physical ability, coaching, strategy, defense.

Training is completely necessary for golf. I dont think that needs to be covered, and if it does, its a lost cause for you.

Endurance is necessary in competitive golf. Many times you have to play 36 holes in a day, and walk it at that. I believe that takes some endurance. think of it like this, most golf courses are about 7000 yards. There are 1760 yards in a mile. That comes to about 4 miles of walking, not counting all the space from green to tee. You have to carry a bag with 14 long metal rods with a heavy piece of metal at the end of them, including all the materials in the bag that you would need. That doesnt require endurance?

Physical ability. A golf swing is an athletic move in which timing and fluidity are essential. There is nothing not physical about a golf swing.

Coaching. You can be your own coach, some people that play have swing coaches or teachers that give them lessons. College and high school teams have coaches. They fall under the athletic budget at both levels and count toward Title IX.

Strategy is a major part of golf. Taking the wind into account on a swing, you might change your ball position to hit it higher or lower. Choosing a spot in the fairway to hit the ball to have a good shot into the green, and actually hitting it there. Hitting a ball onto the right level of a multi level green. Hitting a 2 iron instead of driver on a tight driving hole. Strategy is incredibly necessary.

I'll give you defense. ;)

Gymnastics = Physical training is paramount, endurance, strength.

I don't like the fact that it is judged and not won. NOONE should say that GOLF is harder then the rings or pummel horse. :p

Swimming = Physical training, strength, endurance. Plus its a race. You actually get to beat people by being faster.

Diving = NOT a sport. Hobby. You are judged. You don't necessarily BEAT your opponents. Its not timed. Its not a race. You should be in shape..but you don't have to build your endurance. You don't break a sweat or run out of breath. Fat people don't win diving unless it is the belly flop

Ice Skating = NOT a Sport. Entertainment...like a circus clown juggling. You can't WIN. You are judged. It is a matter of opinion who wins, like cheerleading.

Surfing = Not a sport. A hobby. You can't WIN. You are judged like ice skating.

Track and Field = Taining, endurance, physical ability. You race other people.

So..is Horseshoes a sport with TRUE athletes?

What about Darts or Pool?

How about championship PUTT PUTT.

Everything can't be a sport. Some things have to be games & hobbies.

Golf just lacks LOTS of SPORT attributes..training, endurance, physical ability, coaching, strategy, defense.

Training? People practice hard and long everyday! Endurance? Usually about 4 hours of play!(About hole 15 if you don't watch yourself you will start losing focus!) Physical ability? You have to be in good shape and flexible to make to swing properly! STRATEGY? That is what golf is all about!

So far it's yes 50, no 5.:thumb:

Practice and training are two different things.

Training in the sense of working out, lifting weights, running, jumping rope, sprints, diet and nutrient drinks, a Medical Staff or Physical Therapy.

I'm not trying to change anyone's minds..which is cool.

But don't post that it takes endurance to walk around the grass all day. :p:p

Please!! Yeah..for my dad who has two bum legs..but not for most people.

Most people are driving around in a golf cart..not walking 36 holes in a day.

Professional athletes aren't carrying their own clubs.

Its jut not physically difficult to play.

You dont' run out of breath.

You dont break a sweat.

You don't have to be substituted for.

You don't play in bad weather. (don't call a windy day bad weather, please.)

Golf takes LOTS of practice.

Golf does take SOME strategy. I concede alittle..but not much strategy.

Golf is easier if you ARE in shape..but you don't have to be.

PUTT PUTT on steroids. :D

Some people wont be convinced. Play a round like a high schooler or college kid plays. Most college tournaments play 36 holes the first day and 18 the next carrying their own bag. If you arent tired at the end, you should be a pro basketball or soccer player.

Yeah, go to http://www.dictionary.com and type in golf. You'll get that it is a sport. Because it is!

Touchy aren't we? I'm just trying to get a feel for this argument, because it's intriguing. I normally never bother trying to cite my sources, because I either don't care (I feel sorry that you do, and so much. Seeing that I'm one of 5 people that disagrees with you, how good will you feel if you win this argument, really?), or because I don't really need to.

I think golf is too slow-paced to be considered a sport.

What? So if we play speed-golf then it will be a sport. Not the best arguement.

It depends, what would the rules be for speed-golf?:D

 I've played a few interesting rounds of it. Score wasn't the best but I finshed that SPORT quickly.:thumb:

I also voted no. Golf requires skill and dedication to master. However, if you can't play defense, it's not a sport. Golf, like figure skating and archery, is a skill, but not a sport.

I like that. AND I like archery, so nobody can think I'm just harshing on golf.
