Is Kentucky becoming a talent rich state?

Featured Replies

Reports are saying frosh Euton and Jackson are now getting attention from Kentucky. Rivals and Scout.com has reported that junior Darius Miller with offers from Kentucky, and more. Senior Jon Vanhoose is set to go to D1 Evansville of the MVC conference. Mr. Basketball front-runner and senior Steffphon Pettigrew now has offers from UMass and Bradley while Kentucky is looking at him amongst others. Junior Scotty Hopson of UHA is committed to Mississippi State. Sophomore Jacob Jenkins has visited Kentucky and scout.com reported Jenkins was visiting Indiana and was behind the bench for the Indiana vs Michigan game. Bud Mackey has already committed to play for Indiana. Senior Twany Beckham of Louisville Ballard is signed with D1 school IUPUI. Ty Proffitt is headed to Notre Dame. Players such as Preston Knowles, Shelvin Mack, and Tanner Jacobs are all having their names mentioned for D1 schools.

Is this only the start of Kentucky's talent pool flourishing and providing top talent to colleges? Hopefully the attention will help put more Kentucky kids in position to play at the next level along with getting a free education. Some of my colleagues believe this trend will stay on the upswing and rightfully so.

Preston I have no doubt will go D1 to some school. Wow OY, broke down like that, ky does seem to at least appear to be a talent rich state. Thanks for that post.

OY I think that KY. has always been talent rich in h.s. basketball. I for one would love to see Ky. kids playing at U.K. if they have the talent and some of them do. How can anyone forget the "unforgettables" at U.K.! Imo there is just something special about a Ky. kid wearing that "KENTUCKY" across his chest and playing for the Wildcats (if they have the talehnt), imo they play with a little more U.K. pride. Vandy for one has had quite a few Ky. kids that have worked out well for them and I don't think I have to remind anyone of Lofton at U.T. wearing that disgusting shade of orange.:D There have been others that deserve mention and I am afraid that I would leave someone out by listing some of them and not aware of some others.

There is no doubt talent in ky and quite a bit of D1 talent, however, I do not think that in the state of ky right now there is maybe 2 that could come to ky and produce. All this in relation to size, strength, SPEED, and other factors. The SEC is a faster league probably any other in the country. I even feel like lofton struggles with the speed difference. The one thing that allows him to penetrate the lane as well he does is the fact that he can shoot the ball from 27 ft in and will have to be guarded from that distance.

I agree with you that kids from kentucky will play harder in uk blue than will someone from california but playing hard will not make up for the difference in size, strength, speed. I think tubby and the guys know that so they recruit those three things and not heart.

Whatever they are doing it doesn't seem to be working!!!!! And in a tough battle I will take the heart! I have seen kid's with heart overcome almost impossible odd's against bigger, stronger, quicker oppenent's who had no heart. Now if the B,S,Q, player has heart it would be a different story. If I was scouting I would scout for talent with a heart!! Just my opinion.

I really feel that KY is much more talent laden in football than basketball, the most populous areas of KY have now started to embrace football more so than basketball, and I think that's trickled down to what these kids spend their time doing nowadays.

You forgot to add that Brooks from Lousiville Doss is headed to Penn State.

A recruiter told the Mississippi coach that Beckham, Knowles, Jacobs, Mackey, Pettigrew, Proffit, Mack, and Hopson, could beat any Macdonalds all American team. I don't know how true that is, but we should be proud that these are the kids in the state of Kentucky, plus the many other great players in the state. Hopefully, most of these kids get to stay in Kentucky and play.

That's nice to hear about the kids in the state.

Do you want me to praise you?

Last season there was a thread that claimed that Kentucky's basketball talent was way down. I think it is becoming talent rich, but it will always go in phases.

There are cities that have more talent than the whole state of KY.

No one is saying that Ky has the most talent anywhere! I think it would be understood by anyone that there are cities that have more talent than our whole state. Also there are cities that have guy's on the street's better than anyone in the N.B.A. but that doesn't mean that the N.B.A does not have talent. What we are saying is Ky does have some talent and BYjACK'S WERE PROUD OF IT regardless of the amount!!!!! The cities that have way more than us I bet aren't any prouder than we are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In terms of talent, it's a cycle, some good talent coming up but there has been a void in recent seasons.

Wow, Rockpride! I am not so sure that you are on the same page with everyone else in here. Ky always has been and always will be a basketball state. Nothing will EVER change that. But about the football thing; As kids become bigger, faster, stronger and more "populous" as you say sports that allow more players on the field at a time is becoming more popular, not necessarily football as a sport. Take a school of 1500 students for example, you can still only play 5 at a time, however, football and soccer are now more appealing than ever because you can play in theory 30+ kids or more or soccer 15-20. But in basketball you might play 8 maybe 10 if you are blowing out. It becomes more of a fan favorite due to this reason. Yes the talent might be improving some, better coaches, more interest. But I can guarantee you that powerhouse football teams around the country are not knocking down doors in ky trying to load its teams with ky boys. On the flip side, good basketball programs have and will continue to show up at rupp for the boys sweet 16 because IT full of talent. IMO
