Fayette County Public Schools will cease posting on "X"

I don't know.  There's a crap-ton of first day of school pictures every August. LOL

I'm going to show my ignorance here, but what other platforms would reach a lot of parents? Instagram, X, and what else?  I know very little about Snapchat and even less about LinkedIn.

When our daughter was in school, we received text updates and the school's all-call, but Pendleton County isn't quite the same size as Fayette.

I agree on the first day of school pictures and maybe I am getting old but I was concerned about those pictures as a group.  The guy pics seemed pretty normal but the majority of the girl pics looked like they were going to an adult club, not the the first day of school and it was high school and middle school girls.

Something else I like about Facebook are the groups.  Something as simple as a group for the Predator franchise.  The numbers of people in those groups and participating is off the charts.

Somewhat to Deuce's point I suppose, I do agree it is about a 40 and up platform in some ways.  Older people share a lot and definitely interact with others on Facebook.  When people are younger on Facebook it feels like school pics, baby pics, wedding pics, and frankly a lot of trash and con artists.

I think Marketplace keeps it younger too, but that's just based on what I see and no concrete numbers.

I think the issue with trying to understand Facebook is we all have a unique algorithm so it is nearly impossible to know.

Definitely so.

As long as you can openly say the n word on Twitter then I wouldn’t want my school system affiliated with any of that.

Twitter isn’t a real place.  As long as we treat it like it is real then we are all failing.

Twitter is a place for angst and hate.  There’s literally nothing good about it.

If you could isolate sports and sports info out of that, I would agree in general about Twitter.

But you could apply that to all social media, too. There are many times I find myself saying that social media has run its course and does more harm than good.

Social media has definitely run its course and I hate that it has so much value in today’s society.

Despite how bad it is all around it has become an essential part of life.

62% of Facebook users are ages 18-44.  The largest demographic for Facebook users is 25-34 (24.2%).  That's the ages of parents with kids in school.  I understand why they would prefer that platform.

Now, sports is a different animal.  Failure to utilize X for sports makes no sense.

Thanks for the data.

I would be shocked if that many 18-44 are actually using Facebook. Are they registered for it? Probably. Active on there? I'm not buying it.

This is more theoretical, but many are directed toward FB because the older demographic runs the show, which is where the content is.

Having employed a boatload of people under 30, FB is probably the 4th most popular social media app. If you ask them, they convey they have an account,m but it is never monitored and seen as a joke and place for "old people" to socialize. If it ain't through DM on TT, IG, Snap, or a text, you aren't connecting with anyone these days.

This was exactly my point.

I left it around the time Covid started for that very reason.  So much cruelty and animosity.

And I agree with Deuce that social media does more harm than good.  Which is a shame, because there's so much positive potential.  I have personally tried to be better at not posting things that just stir crap up.  I have to remind myself that no one's mind is going to be changed by a social media post, so why bother?  For the most part, I post things that I find funny and that's about it.

As for the topic at hand, it's hard for schools to communicate or promote these days without social media.  I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I don’t either.  At the same time I can understand why a school system as diverse as FCPS from top to bottom wouldn’t want to fool with Twitter.  Even more so when most of the people they want to reach likely aren’t on Twitter or using Twitter much anyways.

X is still great for breaking news and sports. Other than that it's been ruined by bots and idiots that think people need to hear what they have to spew out.

I'm amazed at how overrun FB and Twitter have become with bots. Usually, that was applied to national discourse, but it is rampant at regional and local levels now, which may be part of Fayette's decision. It's accelerated the past year, which is by design. You know: Free speech!

I can't decide if idiots spewing is worse, or the idiots that believe every bot and meme they come across is fact. People are not bright enough to discern fact from fiction, which is at the heart of the cesspool it's become.

Not going to lie. Twitter is still comedy gold for me.

During those events when Twitter is good, it's REALLY good.
