Beechwood 42 Campbell County 20

Recommended Posts

Disappointing for Camel fans, but an exciting back and forth for several quarters.

First year starters Elijah Depperschmidt and Parker Kist both had a great night defensively for the Camels.  Elijah with several tackles in the backfield and Parker with some great open field tackles against some very elusive receivers.  Both are great examples of why football players should wrestle.  Level change and attack the hips/legs.

Everyone put your referee hats on for "you make the call":

Ruled illegal forward pass.  Not as blatant as the announcers say but a close call.  Need some armchair referees to help me understand.

What questions do you have?

QB was beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass. Both side judges on each side of the field threw their flags.

Is the applicable KHSAA rule the same as the NFL, where I *think* the player’s entire body has to be beyond the line of scrimmage?  If so, initial / cursory look seems pretty close to “legal”.

Note:  I’m not one to complain (@ least generally) about officiating, & am thankful for their collective / on-going efforts.

I have been on both sides of this penalty, trying to determine the steadfast rules.  When I was on the defensive side and also as a rookie referee, I was under the impression there is an imaginary plane (like the end zone) that can not be crossed prior to release.   I was overruled as a referee and out argued by others that this was not the case.

I have been told as long as a portion of the player is at or behind the LOS at beginning of throwing motion, then not a penalty.  Just trying to determine exact rules so that I can become a better fan.

You have the rule correct.

My dad was a football, wrestling and track coach way back in the day.  Always preached participation in multiple sports and the transfer of training benefits.

That was a close one.

The NFHS football handbook, Rule 7 Section 5 Article 1 states:

"It is a legal forward pass, if during a scrimmage down and before team possession has changed, a player of A [the team on offense] throws the ball with both feet of the passer in or behind the neutral zone when the ball is released. Only one forward pass may be thrown during the down."

I watched the pass a few times and it looked to me like Campbell County's QB was running forward and lept off of his rear foot, planting it just behind the neutral zone (the area determined by the width of the football established from the spot of the ball when it is ready for play) and then he released the ball from beyond the neutral zone. That would make it an illegal forward pass. It was close, but I think the stripes were correct in calling the penalty and negating the touchdown.
