Beechwood was very lucky on that one.  How does a kid get that wide open?  There wasn’t anyone within 15 yards of that kid, he could have walked in for a TD.

Mix up in coverage and the DB came up to stop the run by the QB.

Everyone put your referee hats on for "you make the call":

Ruled illegal forward pass.  Not as blatant as the announcers say but a close call.  Need some armchair referees to help me understand.

I got a little bored and did a frame-by-frame enlargement of the video (if you pause a YouTube video you can use the "." period key to advance the video forward by a single frame and the "," comma key to advance it backward by a single frame). Because the camera is zoomed out so much it's tough to get a detailed view of the actual football until the final frame I've got a screenshot of, but if you pause it and advance back and forth a frame at a time you can see a small blur that is actually where the ball is during QB Lucas Anthrop's passing motion and as he releases the ball.

I think it shows all the more that he was standing behind the line of scrimmage when he planted his foot to leap and pass the ball, but that he was then definitely in front of the line of scrimmage when he released the ball, so it was definitely an illegal forward pass. You can't really tell definitively that the ball has been released and is in the air until the last two frames, below, but I think you can also see from the position of his body in the frame or two prior that he has broken past the plane of the neutral zone.

I have the top arrow lined up with where the ball was during Anthrop's passing motion, and in the first couple of pictures the bottom arrow just brings your attention to where his feet where in respect to the 20 yard line, which was the line of scrimmage.

Tough call to have to make for the officials. I definitely feel for Anthrop because it his move forward into the pocket and his throw were absolutely on point...he was just about 2 feet too far forward when he released the ball. Super heads-up play by a junior QB, but I do think the call was right.
