mcpapa
As mean and tough as they came. You didn’t mess with Butkus.

sportsfan41
Always hate to hear about these professional athlete legends passing. With that said though, it seems like Butkus lived a long and full life, which, unfortunately isn't typically the case for professional athletes. Tranquility Base
Story I read said he died, peacefully, in his sleep. I hope that is the case. After his playing career and his stint in Hollywood, he kind of dropped from the scene. I hope that was a choice and not the effects of a brief, but violent NFL career. Breds82
As someone who wasn’t old enough to have seen him play, but grew up on the good ole days of NFL films, his highlights were awe inspiring. I loved to hear him talk about how he wanted to just punish his opponent on every single play. If you can’t get excited watching his highlights you can’t get excited about anything. hrcarrier
RIP to one of the all time greats. Many people could use the toughness and grit that Duck Butkus had, in sports and our.
mcpapa
It is a testament to his career that the Dick Butkus Award, which goes to the top professional, college and high school linebackers, has been around since 1985.
spindoc
Especially sad for me. He was my father’s favorite player. Born on the same day. Back in the day the book mobile would make stops and you could buy paperback books at school. I was in the 3rd grade and bought a book (with paper route money)about the greatest linebackers in football history. Of course he was #1. Wish I still had the book. dshoe40
If he played now, he would be suspended half the year.
OlDog75
I used to use this Butkus quote in my avatar years ago: "I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important - like a league game or something." RIP Dick Butkus
