Infrastructure problems at high school football stadiums

Featured Replies

This is in Tennessee (Beech Buccaneers) but I am sure there are other stadiums at the end of their shelf life.

What Kentucky stadiums need an upgrade?

I would say many do.  It seems many updates are damage control projects.  Plus, many just need updated to accommodate crowds. It’s sad when you travel to a stadium and it won’t accommodate a fan base.  Football is a big money draw for most schools, the fans  are paying that bill, make a stadium to hold them and more will show up.

Most JCPS stadiums except Ballard need an upgrade.  Male and Manuals stadiums are ok, but the rest seem pretty old to me.

Manual is a beautiful old gal... hush.

I think old Manual stadium is the best. I like it when St. X plays there. Stadium I played in since St.X used to play home games there. I'm sure could do some upgrades but I still like it.

I know Bowling Green did a preemptive strike on theirs a couple of years ago.

The previous stadium was really old. While it was awesome and could have lasted longer, BG wanted to go ahead and put in a top tier new stadium complete with turf before the other stadium got too bad.

Considering these venues serve our children I think that is the way to do it.

Especially when the alternative can cause you a situation like Newport is going through.

Absolutely.

Bowling Green’s stadium is awesome. We came up to the Hoptown game in ‘21. Planning on coming up during our Bye week when the Purples host Christian County.

We were fortunate that the collapse happened early Monday/Tuesday morning. Tuesday evening there was a middle school game scheduled.

Some people say Mayfields stadium is a ticking time bomb. It is 70 years old. They have made a few slight updates but just cosmetic stuff, nothing structural. I would hate to see it go but if it’s a safety issue then it’s something that has to be addressed at some point. There will be a 5,000+ people there on Friday.

Interesting point. My first thought is it is a concrete monolith so there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Then Newport and Ballard come to mind - both with concrete stands that had to be torn down.

We thought the same.  However, it appears that water erosion caused the center concrete block partition supporting this concrete structure to fail.  The center section above then collapsed under its own weight. This was our visitors side. Our home side is approximately 20 rows tall, spanning between the 25 yard-lines. It is massive and has the same series of concrete block partitions supporting the concrete slabs above. I'm relatively certain it too will be condemned by the engineer's report due early next week. We are playing our home game at nearby White House HS. Several other stadiums of similar construction and age exist in our county.  All are being inspected this week.

Just drove by Newport, looks like they have a big crane there, hope they are getting ready to put the stands up.
