Onward Christian Soldiers: Reigning 3A Champs Begin Quest For Repeat Against Rebuilt, But Dangerous, Red Devils

Records: Season opener for both

Series History: First ever meeting

Keep your eye on: CAL's pitch and catch components vs. Owensboro's last line of defense. Mr. Football candidate Cole Hodge lights the fuse for the Centurions with the return of his top three receivers, Darwin Cotton, Justin Ruffin (Army commit), and younger brother Connor Hodge. That's over 2,000 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns worth of production. The Red Devils will be rocking a largely rebuilt defense from the front end to the back. The secondary, in particular, is staring at a monumental task in Week 1. Also look out for running back Evan Hampton's possible coming out party for Owensboro. It's a matter of when, not if.

CAL 35-Owensboro 21 I'm a Devil thru and thru but I don't see us getting past them. If we don't fix the DB situation then it will be a long year.

  • Mmmm!! Sounds like lots of laundry being thrown on the Red & Black.

Owensboro takes there lumps early this season. Starting next week. Too much experience and fire power on CAL’s offense for these young Red Devils. I only see 4 players on defense that got playing time last year on varsity. Winstead hasn’t lined up at safety in either scrimmage. That’s hurts O since he’s more than likely the best DB on the team. DB’s and Linebackers are talented and willing but inexperienced. They tend to find themselves out of position often and CAL will make them pay.

I don’t see O being able to move the ball very well either putting their defense in bad positions all night. QB Delacey just isn’t going to get it done… Winstead and Hampton will have a couple of break away runs but won’t be enough to keep pace CAL’s scoring especially after CAL loads the box and dares our QB to throw long, which I’m not sure he’s even capable of doing.

I'm going to vote O because the homer in me won’t let me choose otherwise. But my football sense tells me this will be a 35-14 type of game in CALs favor.

Owensboro is very young but has some players.  I love the fact Owensboro scrimmaged Central Hardin, Mayfield and Boyle.  I also love playing CAL and BG out of the gate.  4 of those 5 teams are top 20 in overall state, and 3 of the 4 are all top 10ish.  These games will do wonders for OHS.

Against Mayfield, and against Boyle Co., Owensboro's DB's were lost/confused multiple times leading to big plays. I just don't think that will be fixed by week 1. On offense the Red Devils can't seem to complete a pass more then 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and the On-line hasn't consistently opened holes for the run game. The Red Devils will improve as the season goes on, and the schedule gets easier, but against CAL,BG,etc. it's going to be tough sledding. Give me CAL 31-13.

It’s hard to predict how Owensboro will be after watching a tough disciplined team that executes like Boyle co ! Owensboro will struggle at the QB position and the RB’s are solid and the O line has got to get better .I don’t see Owensboro’s  throwing game to be much of a factor just hope QB knows when to throw and when to tuck it and run upfield to keep the chains moving . D looks ok and I believe if they tighten up them D backs they will continue to get better just hope the offense does as well or it will be a long season for them .

CAL  34-14.

Will this game be streamed?

Nothing appears confirmed, but if it's streamed, this is my best guess for where you'll find it: CAL's Channel at livesportscaster.com

They've handled CAL's home games in recent years.

CAL 35-Owensboro 21

I'm a Devil thru and thru but I don't see us getting past them. If we don't fix the DB situation then it will be a long year.

Game day! I hope the Devils go out and leave it all on the field. Defense will have to step it up a notch and offense will have to win time of possession to have any chance at pulling this one off. Expecting a big game from Crowe, Hampton and Winstead.

Devils need to bring pressure off and on.  Delacey big game to start but I think he wants the challenge.  Got to look deep a few times to Hampton.  Delacey has to manage game.  Don’t throw interceptions out of panic, gotta throw it away or short of first down some if that is what’s given.  Move chains, play field position.  Play smart, win TO battle.   I think Devils come to play.  Head says CAL 28-14.  Cal preps says 35-21 CAL.

I've hesitated to comment on this one as I'm just not sure.

But have decided to go with a CAL 28-21 game.  I think O plays well, but will have to be really disciplined to beat CAL.  Just think they are too young and inexperienced right now to do so.  Good luck to both teams!

Where is CAL’s field??
