Why the next two years? The Reds have control over those rookies for the next 5 years.

Exactly.  The window isn't as small as some think.  Plus some of these guys will get extended ala Greene.  If you extend them early it won't break the bank.  They just need to make the correct decisions on who to extend.

The situation is very reminiscent of what the Indians had back in the early-mid 90's.  Lofton, Belle, Thome, Baerga, Alomar, Rameriez, etc. all coming up around the same time.

Reds lead 5-0 in the 6th. Abbott allows only 1 hit over the first 5 innings. Benson, CES, India and Maile have produced the runs. Maile with a 2 run HR.

Reds win 5-1, split the series with the red hot Giants.

Abbott saves the bullpen with 8 shutout, 1 hit innings.

Pen gives up a HR late, but the Reds hold on for the 5-1 win and the series split with the Giants.    DBacks come in for the weekend in a battle of second place teams in their division.  Arizona currently holds one of the 3 WC spots, Reds are 2 games out.   Big weekend.
