One would certainly hope that some entity would step up and help in relocating as many of the families as possible for as long as needed.

I know right.  If I would have won that last big powerball jackpot it would be me but like 99.8% of us we are mostly helpless.

They probably don't have the means to go elsewhere and now their property has no value either, so selling and moving doesn't work either. 

Does anyone know if their homeowners insurance would cover anything like this? About the only way I could think these folks could even attempt at getting any kind of money from this. Of course insurance is just a huge crock of crap also.

General speaking the majority of homeowners insurance polices would not be written with the intent to provide coverage for an incident such as this.  

 

 

That’s what I was expecting. When I lived in Bellevue the train literally ran a block away from my house 4-5 times a day. I loved hearing that train roll through with the windows open, but I never even once thought of derailment, especially a catastrophic one. Even though I lived about a mile from the river up on the “hill” I was still asked if I wanted flood insurance, but nothing about if a train derailed and caused this type of situation.

There is no need for homeowner's insurance to cover this.  The liability rests with Norfolk Southern.  Railroads are not required to purchase railway liability insurance, but most do. Rail liability is sold primarily in excess and surplus lines and has five main coverages.  One of the five is Bodily injury and property damage liability, which covers injuries and destruction in case of derailment.  I would hate to be the insurance company right now for Norfolk Southern.

When are they finally going to get Dewey out of the railroad industry?  ?

Seriously, my prayers for those affected by this now and in the future.

When are we going to treat railroad crashes like we do plane crashes and fix the problems to the best of our ability?
