NKY Girls Basketball Top 10 (2/6)

Recommended Posts

We had a relatively smooth week of basketball in NKY, including crowning a Freshman Champion (Notre Dame over Ryle), as well as a JV Champion (Cooper over Holy Cross).  We do have a little bit of movement this week based on some interesting results last week, and in the last couple of weeks of the regular season, we do get a few more marquee match-ups to lock our Top 10 into place heading into the District and Regional tourneys.  Without further ado....

1.  Cooper (20-3) -- last week 3-0.  The clear class of the 9th Region, a bona-fide state champion candidate, and also the best JV team in the area.

2.  Holy Cross (22-5) -- last week 1-0.  Sounds like the Indians had a cool experience at Hoosier Gym in Indiana, and an impressive margin of victory over a solid Walton Verona team.

3.  Ryle (18-7) -- last week 1-0.  Sounds like they are getting Snider back for the post-season, which really help galvanize things for the talented Ryle club.

4.  Dixie (20-6) -- last week 2-0.  Dixie continues to chug along, will easily win their district tourney, and will be a tough out when we get to NKU.

5.  Conner (15-6) -- last week 1-0.  A VERY impressive win over Notre Dame in Park Hills last week!!

6.  Highlands (17-8) -- last week 1-1.  Their loss last week was a home defeat at the hands of Cooper.

7.  Notre Dame (13-8) -- last week 1-2.  Took a loss at Cooper and then followed it up the next day with a home loss to Conner.

8.  Bishop Brossart (18-8) -- last week 0-2.  The Lady Stangs dropped two home games last week, vs McNicholas (OH) and vs Ryle.

9.  Pendleton County (16-6) -- last week 2-0.  The Lady Cats haven't had a lot of tests of late, but Coach Kelsch has put together a very nice first year.

10. NewCath (15-8) -- last week 2-0.  Will have a puncher's chance vs Highlands in the 36th District, but only just, so will need a big outing in the first round at NKU to advance vs a district champion if they fall to the Birds in the District tourney.

================================================

*  St. Henry (13-9) -- last week went 2-0.

*  Grant County (15-9) -- last week went 1-0.

*  Simon Kenton (13-11) -- last week went 2-1, their only loss was at home to Cooper.

*  Scott (12-10) -- last week went 1-1, their loss was on the road at Mason County in a low-scoring affair.

Why is there never a regular season game between Highlands and NDA?  Is there bad blood there?

I didn't know there was never a game, but I did ask someone the other day why they weren't playing this year and got a non-response.  I don't know if this is a Kes vs Jamie thing, or something bigger, or nothing at all and it just didn't work out, but this year would have been a good game.

Glad you thought about it as well!

I don't think it's a personal thing. Idk. Interested to know to which side of the fence your query was directed. But there may be a pattern? Take a look at the series records, head-to-head, at Holy Cross vs. Highlands and Notre Dame vs. Highlands, during Kes' HC tenures at both schools - at what point were those series discontinued?

Might have something to do with the titantic struggle in the Regional tournament about 10 years ago or so when Highlands slowed it down against a heavy favorite in NDA. Wound up like 21-12 or something like that. Sometimes schools just have no desire to compete against each other. Also they are in different NKAC divisions. Both play Louisville and Cincinnati opponents right? Only so many games.

This is not the reason.

You knew this was coming JOAT.....

If you know that isn't the answer, than you likely know what IS the answer.

Hope you share what you can.

I cannot say anything with 100% certainty, but most can put two and two together.

FYI, in the most recent Statewide Poll of the 16 journalists covering the state, including Jason Frakes at the CJ, James Weber from the Enquirer, and the esteemed Evan Dennison from LinkNKY, the following NKY girls' teams were ranked / receiving votes:

#3  Cooper

#7  Holy Cross

#9  Ryle

T19  Dixie

Interesting that this comes up, I was told  recently that it has to do with some specific players from Campbell County deciding to attend NDA. I question the validity of that explanation in that one of the players isn’t even a basketball player and the other doesn’t live in Ft Thomas and was NEVER considering HHS as an option. So this just serves to say that there are many theories…
