Clearly several votes CovCath ahead of Warren Central, which is odd to me.

Not sure I'd go with several, but yes, 3 did.

Looks like GRC got 7 1st place votes and 1 second.  79

Warren Central got 1 1st place vote, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds.  70

CovCath got 3 seconds, 3 thirds, and 2 fourths.  65

I find funny about the poll is nothing with the top 10, but in the others who received votes Greenup Co. received 5 votes which would have them according to the AP as the 12th ranked team in the state and going into last night their record was 1-4 and the lost again last night to fall to 1-5.

Several, few, not much difference.  It was a snap statement based on knowing that Central got one first place vote, so knowing that broke down to roughly 8.5-8.6 points per vote after that, so I made my guesstimate. I just find it odd because like the GRC/Warren Central debate, I'd think you'd just defer to who won from last year since so much is similar.  Especially since CovCath lost a little more.  Of course, it's a descent into madness to try to grasp why AP voters vote the way they do.

Are those guesses of yours in terms of how it broke down based on math or is there somewhere that shows that actual breakdown of voting?

Not really a guess, it provides the total points and first place votes, the math is really pretty simple.

One could argue that CovCath's win over Great Crossing is better than any win Warren Central has, but really, you're splitting hairs in December worrying about being 2nd or 3rd in a state poll.

I agree with that - though ironically, the AP doesn't, going by this poll - they've got Western rated higher.

I'm not fired up about it, I was just mildly surprised.

The Greenup County thing is bizarre.

Knowing how some of the AP voters can be, I checked Green County and Greenwood.   Nope.

Yea I thought that as well and I actually went online and saw it from the AP just like that. They would be lucky to be ranked in the top 10 of the 16th region let alone the state.

AP has Harlan Co. at #10 ??? How has this happened?

Paging Mr. @Les. Please pick up the white courtesy phone in the main lobby.

For those wondering, the Greenup vote was an error. I’ll fess up here because it really aggravated me.

At the time I voted, Great Crossing was not among the available choices that are part of AP’s voting system. Someone else had called that out, but AP hadn’t fixed it when I voted, so I voted Greenup in the slot for Great Crossing and noted on the form in three places that my Greenup vote was a Great Crossing vote. The system doesn’t let you leave a spot blank. New schools are sometimes slow to make it into the list.

My notes weren’t seen somehow by the AP editor. And in Greenup went. I should have followed up my ballot with an email, but alas …. I didn’t see the error until it was too late.

Won’t happen again. Hate that it marred the first poll of the season.

This is an amazing post and demonstrates the community value of a web site like this for insatiable sports nuts like us. While providing very inside stuff as he unpacks what happened to him during the voting process, this guy demonstrates what every sports media person should be: Honest, integrous, fair, caring, conscientious, courageous, transparent, able and informative. Nice job, dude. Outstanding personal character is a skill.

North took a surprising tumble against Simon Kenton, but I would have North Oldham in my top 10.   Not having them in the "also receiving votes" category is borderline criminal.

However, AP voters are heavily influenced by record, since they cannot see all the teams....
