"5th-years" in the Sweet 16®?

Featured Replies

Male and Jeffersontown will both start "5th-years" in the Sweet 16  - seniors from last year who opted to return for another year due to Covid-related restrictions last year.  Do any other teams in the Sweet 16 feature 5th-year impact players?  Was this just allowed in Jefferson County?

It was allowed all across the commonwealth, can't answer your other question.

Cole Vincent from Muhlenberg County returned for a 5th year as well.  Dez Lindsey at Male and Will Vassar at Jeffersontown are the other ones I'm aware of.

I believe Evan Smith of Lincoln County was a fifth-year player and key contributor but he was injured in the region tournament and won't be playing at the state tournament. Unfortunate end for the young man. I'm not aware of any other fifth-years at Lincoln County.

I thought it was a county by county decision.  And that Oldham County voted against it.  Or maybe I'm thinking of something else related to Covid.......

It was up to each school district. Was allowed across the Commonwealth for any school that wanted to allow it.

Jaxon Smith he started as an 8th grader ?

There are kids that were held back at some point in time in their academic career that play in the tournament every year. Obviously, prior to this one time exception, it was before high school. It’s kind of getting old to keep hearing this pointed out though. I can guarantee there are more 5th year players on teams that aren’t playing in the sweet 16 than there are who are.

Good point. There are more than 200 teams that did not make it to Rupp, and 16 that did.
