Open Job: Campbell County

Featured Replies

With Coach Woolf stepping down as head coach of the Camels, that makes Campbell County the second job in Northern Kentucky and the second job in 6A District 6 to come open.

Who are some of the likely candidates for this one?

  • New Campbell County coach is Brian Weinrich

  • Players have been asked to meet tomorrow after school for an announcement.  Appears a hire has been made.

Not that it is a job that will pull the same candidates, but who were some of the most suggested outside coaches for the SK job? It's possible some of the same candidates would apply here.

I think Jesse Herbst was the name I heard mentioned most as a contender at Simon Kenton, aside from Roy Lucas...although I'm not sure that Herbst even applied for the SK job. He was a longtime assistant coach/defensive coordinator at Simon Kenton under Marksberry, and went back to take the head coaching job at Dayton, his alma mater, where he is also currently the AD. Hard telling if he would apply for the job.

Very very positive vibes about his work at Dayton from those I know in small school NKY football too.

Not knocking Campbell County in any way, but I hope Herbst stays at Dayton. For the first time in a long time it seems like they are fielding consistently improved teams. I know success can be fleeting at a small school but he really seems like the right guy for that job.

That's where I was in my comment above about the positive vibes. Seems things are going the right way.

One thing that is always interesting in these searches is what positions a school will have open the following year vs what possible candidates teach. Would a school district be willing to have a coach that is not in the building? Would the candidate expect another type of stipend (AD, etc) to sweeten the pot a bit? Lot's go into hiring a coach behind the scenes.

With all of that said, it is possible Campbell could take the avenue of hiring within which limits the necessity of predicting a position opening, etc. Are there any internal candidates currently on staff that may be interested?

I know I might get beat up again by mentioning his name but I think the current coach at Newport would be a good pick up by the Camels.

Campbell County in the last 3 years is 4-26 (based on KHSAA Scoreboard), so I doubt they are going to get the applicants that are turn key winners.

Why the Newport coach?  Let's just say I believe he has moved out of the Fort and is much much closer to CCHS then NHS, so proximity is a BIG selling point.

I just don't know if he is ever going to be a good fit down there.

Again, I realize I will probably be crucified by suggesting this idea but throwing it out there anyway.

I was already thinking that same thing myself, Frankie.

Campbell County seems like it might be a little more up BW's alley in terms of demographics than the Newport job is.

It seems like this would be a good job. Great facilities, large school, community support, solid middle school program, etc. Also, they've had success across nearly every other sport (wrestling, basketball, baseball) so there are athletes in the building. And while the district isn't easy, you should be able to compete in it every year have decent playoff runs. No one expects you to win a state title in 6A, so having playoff success is where the bar is set. I feel like this is a job where someone can come in without the burden of unrealistic expectations, and build a solid competitive, winning team pretty quickly and be a hero.

Obviously, nothing is ever that simple or easy, but I do feel like they've got many of the right pieces already in place to make this job attractive.

Here is 2 things that should happen:

1. Hire BW

2. Schedule better!!!!!!  Except for NCC this past season you played a horrendously hard schedule out of your district:  Woodford Co, Corbin, HHS, Conner, Cooper (2 of those teams played at Kroger at the end of the year!)

Most years, outside of maybe Corbin, or Highlands when those teams are really good, Campbell should be able to compete with Conner, Cooper and Woodford. And I'd argue that they should play Conner, Cooper and HHS year in and year out because they are so close. Outside of maybe Scott or Holmes (who are both 4a schools), what other non district teams in NKY should Campbell be playing if they shouldn't play Conner, Cooper and Highlands?

Scott, Holmes and Boone County.....were the schools I was thinking of.

Then if you wanted to sprinkle in some small school stuff, call up Barth to see if WV would want to play.

I realize the Highlands game will probably never be taken off the schedule due to proximity and longtime rivalry....

Which two teams played at Kroger at the end of the year?

My fault!  My eyes playing tricks on me looking at KHSAA Scoreboard.

For the record I was referring to WC and Corbin but now I realize I goofed saying they made it to the finals.....forgive me.
