How do you contain Xavier Brown?

Featured Replies

Asking for a friend.

1. Be in the right spot.

2. Don't miss any tackles.

3. Hope that if he gets it into space you have a good angle to the sideline.

4. Keep the clock moving when you are on offense so he has fewer opportunities to hurt you.

Great players make great plays and Brown is a great player. The key is to get your house in order and don't make a mistake defending him that makes it easy for him. Make him earn everything, you probably cannot shut him down but this allows you to minimize his damage and impact.

As numerous, numerous teams can attest though... easier said than done.

You don’t stop him, you only hope to slow him down.

Hope someone gets a holding penalty

How about when he is on defense?

Hope he just scored on a long run and is on the sidelines getting a breather ?

With all seriousness, on defense you would have to go to the other side of the field and the guy over there has 6 interceptions and is tied for #2 in 2a in interceptions.

That is one of the major improvements LCA has made this year on defense that I don't think many have given them credit for. They lead 2a in interceptions.

LCA is very creative on how they get their playmakers the ball. They have a lot of moving parts, a ton of motion to get defenses moving.  I think the key is to get aligned correctly and bring multiple hats to the ball

One thing that isn't talked about much with LCA and Brown is how strong they are. If Brown gets to the second level it is extremely difficult for corners/safeties to take him down 1 on 1 due to how strong he is.

So, to me, containing him running the ball you have to keep him from getting to the second level, but LCA does such a good job of designing and executing plays to get him 1 on 1 at the second level. Like many have said here, easier said than done in stopping him.

Ask LCA’s coaches. They have the blueprint for stopping Xavier Brown.

Just so the myth does not gain belief over the truth, Xavier Brown was the leading ball carrier in the game for LCA. Emerson had a higher yards per carry than Brown and got fewer carries than Brown. Easy to say give Brown more touches but when it isn't working well enough, how long do you keep trying it? Especially when you are trailing on the scoreboard.

Can they use the same excuse for 2020 as well?

Excuse for what? I am not sure what you are asking.

In case you are asking about Brown stats for last year's title game, he was their leading rusher last year, got the most touches and was more effective last year. Brown put up 201 yards offense against Beechwood last year. And Beechwood still won the game.

This year Brown was only able to get 66 yards on offense. Beechwood kept him from impacting the game.

The truth is likely somewhere in between. Beechwood deserves due credit for defending Brown when he touched the ball better than anyone else this season. I hate to question LCA's coaches, because frankly, I'm not qualified. But if - And I say if because he may have gotten dinged up in the first half. I don't know the whole truth there - if he was healthy, how do you not get him the ball more than ten times? It's the state championship game of his senior year. You feed him the ball as many times as it takes.
