That would be at least a one game suspension if I was the coach.

When situations like this arise I  am dumbfounded. Why would you go through all practices in the heat wearing full pads, just to quit on your teammates bc the game is not going according to plan? Football has to be the hardest one to “just show up” and expect to be good. It takes all 11 players going as hard as they can at the same exact time every play.

If you were the head coach how would you handle all the personnel issues?

I’m in the old school line of thinking. And as much as I think Bobby Knight is a bully, if their butts meet the bench, that should change things. If not said player(s) shouldn’t be on the field. It doesn’t do anyone any good, mentally or physically, to not be 100% invested in playing a physical sport like football. It’s dangerous to be on the field not going as hard as you can. 
 

Coach Lucas had a situation like this at Newport, he turned it around. Maybe have to dig into the archives and figure out how he did it.

There is no doubt that Newport has talented students within the walls of their school.  But as a coach you have to develop discipline up front in your players and staff.  Once you establish the discipline you can put together a good program.  You also develop team leaders and staff that are going to help enforce the discipline and help with getting others to accept the program you are trying to build.  

In the short, Newport had no chance of beating Beechwood.  Why?  Beechwood was more discipline, prepared, and more weapons.  But what could Newport have done to improve themselves - they could have worked on discipline, possibly move people around to see if others were capable of playing those positions and becoming a team leader.  

I understand that numbers are a big plus for any team but when you have discipline issues, others do not want to be a part of your team.  Kids want structure; they may not ask for it directly but they appreciate you more when you are providing structure, discipline and making them better.  Those are things you remember after you have finished your playing days.

The ship was making progress and in a good place.  He is a big part of the reason the ship is sinking.

Coach Wynn had Newport playing pretty well and kids were under control.  Unfortunately he went to Mason County.  No need to look back to Coach Lucas.  Same kids playing now were much more disciplined the last few years.  Maybe look in the mirror.

At Newport the issues aren't issues IF you understand the culture and set expectations from Day 1.  See Rod Snapp on the basketball side of things and Joe Wynn the last few years in football.    What I am witnessing is making me sick to my stomach because it is the adults who have to set this from the time they walk in the door.  To get respect you have to earn respect is what comes to mind.  

Fridays game was the biggest display of “lack of control” that rivals another 2A local team of recent years. Kids throwing punches, spitting in faces, etc.  I couldn’t believe what I heard was being said and done on the field…….

It has to be a effort by all the teachers, Coaches PLUS administration at Newport.  If they cannot field teams, because of their behavior in the classroom, halls, practice, etc. Oh well, hopefully it will send a loud enough message behavior issues are not going to be tolerated. Many of us have heard stories of harrowing things happening during school time from Teachers, Coaches and Students, why is any of that tolerated? Why aren't these kids suspended, or turned over to higher authorities? I guess I just don't get it... I can hear the rhetoric now....

How does Coach Ben Nevels handle his Student Athletes? It has to be a similar situation over at Holmes. Is it not? Whatever Coach Nevels is doing over there is working. I'm sure Coach Nevels has his challenges but we rarely hear anything unless it's spoke of. Or are they just Two different personalities between Coach Nevels and Coach Weinrich.

You don't need to make comparisons to other schools.  Same kids under Joe Wynn none of this happened.  Same kids under Rod Snapp none of this happens.  Same kids under Weinrich?  Maybe the folks in Fort Thomas were on to something......
