This once dominate football program has not won a state championship since 2015.  What happened to Mayfield?  Will they ever win another state football championship?  What is Mayfield's future?

One thing that strikes me about this years Mayfield squad is how young they are. A lot of young guys getting valuable time against good competition. I'd imagine they're back in the title game in the next 3 years and then once you're there anything can happen!

Mayfield has been to the title game 3 times , 17 18 and 19 ,I dont think we've gone anywhere. It is harder to  win 2A and you throw in the hosing we took in the Somerset game. Mayfield played some it's best ball in it's history getting to 10 title games in 11 seasons. Thats pretty good. The thing is the beast wins, the beast wants more and it's just not sustainable to win that much.  Mayfield probably wont win a title this season but they can make the title game if everything goes its way.

They are young!  Coles, Barnes, & Galbreath will need to be replaced along a couple of O-linemen.  The Cardinals are capable of replacing/reloading and will be in the 2A hunt for the next several years.  Most Soph/Jrs are the key to their defense and will continue to grow.  I don't think Mayfield has gone anywhere. It just seems like other schools (Beechwood/LCA) are reaping the rewards for their system.  I still thing they will be a presence at the end of November.

I agree that Mayfield ran into a buzzsaw of stellar teams three years in a row.  I think those Mayfield teams were better than any of the previous 1A championship Mayfield teams from the first half of the decade, but 2A football is a different animal.  Can't complain about the Somerset game.  All it would have taken for a win was to come up with a defensive stop.  Somerset said no.

Again, QB play has been the biggest factor.  Stinson, Arnett, the Guhys...those dudes were smart and talented, elevated the entire team, and masked flaws that would have otherwise been exposed.  Mayfield will always have athletes, just need elite level QB play to keep them at the top.  That and not run into meat grinder teams in the title game.

I'm not sure about underclassman on the roster.  I know 8th grade has a talented team.  7th grade is ok.  Elementary (3rd thru 6th grade) has some good players and has had lots of success as a program.

When I was doing my "research" for this fun thread it brought back a lot memories of just how good Mayfield has been the last few years.  Things just didn't go their way in the finals.

Mayfield was just outmatched in the Danville and CAL games.  Somerset was a tough loss to take.  Less about the ending, and more about Kade Neely tearing his patella tendon on his first catch in the first freaking quarter.  Other than the Somerset QB, he was the most talented player on the field.  Seeing how Mayfield lost on the last play, I think he would have tipped the scales in Mayfield's favor if he doesn't go down.  IMO, he was one of the best receivers, and toughest players, to come thru Mayfield in the last three decades.

With a penalty included.  I complained for a couple weeks after that game.  But I tested my bias by reading objective opinions on here.  From what I read, most participants on this site thought it was a penalty.  After I let the emotions clear, it seemed like a reasonable call.  I also know if I was a Somerset fan I would have lost my cookies if they DIDN'T call a penalty on that play.

Hello Folks, I've returned, baited out of retirement by a few folks on here. 😉

Welcome back! All it took was a looming opportunity to stick it to Beechwood again.

You all going to roast another pig before this year's game at Mayfield?
