NKY Preseason Top 10, Aug 9th edition

Featured Replies

Doesn’t look like anybody has done this before or at least in the recent past.  Thought I would give it a go.  Thought it would be fun for bragging rights and have a forum to agree or disagree your “Ranking”.  This first Preseason ranking is a complete shot in the dark but going off of what I know presently and how these teams played last year, I’ll give this a try.  Luckily right out of the gate there are some good NKY team matchups that will potentially shake up the next weeks Rankings.  I plan on having a new ranking out every Monday.  The NKY teams are defined as schools within (Boone, Kenton & Campbell ONLY).  Please be kind about this first go around and we can settle the debate on the Pitch.

1. NOTRE DAME

  • This week at Cooper

2. HIGHLANDS

  • This week at Beechwood

3. SIMON KENTON

  • This week vs Bishop and vs South Oldham

4. DIXIE

  • This week at Dunbar and at Scott County

5. COOPER

  • This week vs Ludlow vs Notre Dame vs Owen Co

6. CONNER

  • This week vs Scott vs Bishop at Oldham Co

7. NCC

  • This week vs St Henry at Ryle

8. RYLE

  • This week vs NCC at Assumption

9. HOLY CROSS

  • This week vs Holmes vs Scott vs Calvary

10. BEECHWOOD

  • This week at Boone vs Ludlow vs Highlands

I realize there are a few teams not in this Preseason Top 10 but there are some good opportunities for them to crack it with some good games this week.

Instead of just telling me that I am off base on the assessments, tell me why a school should be getting more love in these rankings (i.e. returning players, new players, etc)

Good idea.  I'll contribute my 2 cents.

No issue with your list, but Ryle and St. Henry might deserve a little more love.  Ryle has the Griffin twins (goalie and striker), two of the top players in NKY at important positions.  The striker is committed to Xavier and goalie is rock solid.  I don't know anything else about their roster, but, It's Ryle, they should field a solid group of athletes around 2 high level players.

St. Henry tied Sacred Heart down at Bluegrass games, and their defense held up fairly well in scrimmage vs. NDA.  Those two preseason efforts deserve some props, and give them confidence to build on going forward.  New coach might have kids playing tough and confident!

NCC plays both Ryle and St. Henry this week, those could be interesting games.

I'm hearing some kids/Seniors are opting to play for or prioritize playing for their Kings Hammer Fall ECNL team due to not getting college coach exposure during the Covid lockdowns.  The Gerak twins not playing for Dixie would be a big loss.  I'm not sure what other teams would be impacted.

The KH fall ECNL team has 0 to do with college exposure as many of the girls already have college offers on the table.  I only know about 7 of them right now, but 6 of them already have multiple D1 offers or verbal commitments.  This team is more about training and playing with some of the top talent in the area.

Ryle - 1 but she never played high school ball (might be 2 players as I think another lives in Union, also never played high school ball)

Highlands - 1

NDA - 1 but never played high school

Dixie - 3

Saw that NCC defeated St. Henry and Simon Kenton beat Bishop Brossart.

Yes sir, NCC 3-2 and Simon Kenton 4-0.  Went down to Newport and caught the NCC game.  They definitely looked good.  It looked like St Henry needs to shore up their defense back line too, NCC scored on a few breakaways that they managed to outrun the back line allowing 1v1 against the goalie a few times.

BIG NIGHT OF NKY GIRLS SOCCER TONIGHT!!!

9 out of the Top 10 teams are on the Pitch this evening with 2 matches pitting Top 10 teams against one another.

Here are the 2 Major matchups:

#7 NCC at #8 RYLE - 7:30PM

#1 NOTRE DAME at #5 COOPER - 8:00PM

Good luck to all!

Unfortunately, if you haven’t seen it already Boone Co is currently in COVID protocol cancelling their games this week, which impacted 2 teams trying to gain access into the Top 10 and 1 team hanging on at the 10th spot:  St. Henry, Bishop Brossart, and Beechwood.

First of all, I LOVE this, I may do the same on the boys' side if there is interest.  Awesome job, Frank.

Secondly, I was looking forward to last night's Cooper vs NDA game, two GREAT programs, with two awesome coaches (a veteran that has earned his stripes vs one of the hottest young coaches in the area), but ended up being very surprised at how one-sided the play was.  Forget the score, which at 4-0 was shocking, but it was not nearly as competitive both ways as I had thought it may be.  Season is early, but expected a little more from the Jags last night.

I took away a "glass more than half full" view of the Jags effort last night.  Yes, NDA dominated possession, and created a ton of attacking opportunities, however, The Jags defense showed speed, toughness, and defended aggressively throughout.  A highschool defense can only defend for so long, and NDA brought their A game last night.  They may not see anything that resembles that speed and skill the rest of the year.  The Jags have a big, fast striker, who looked dangerous when she had a few chances.  They have a skilled attacking mid, solid defense, and they played with speed and physicality.  NDA just had more of it.  NDA played a VERY fast pace last night, it could've been 8 or 10 goals, but they ran with them in a way not sure other teams can.  I think The Jags will be solid going forward.

Recap from last night:

As Deuce stated NDA pretty much manhandled Cooper 4-0

Simon Kenton went down 1-3 to their Region 8 foe South Oldham

Dixie lost in a heartbreaker against a tough Dunbar team in a PK shootout 3-4

Conner and Bishop Brossart concluded with a 3-3 Tie

Beechwood took care of business against Ludlow 10-0

Then the other major matchup I was looking forward to NCC @ Ryle was cancelled b/c of the HEAT!

Now onto tonight with the only matchup in the Top 10:

Highlands at Beechwood, it says kickoff is 7:30 but I am wondering with the heat if it will be pushed to 8pm.

Looking at the final rosters of these teams, I think NDA will be at the top all year by themselves.  I think everyone else will be playing for 2nd.  However, you never know with teenage girls.

I will add to your post and say I think Scott Hughes is fantastic, he'll certainly (to your point) use a lot of last night to grow from, to show the many positives, and they'll get better.  Maybe what I should have said is, the fault is on me, I expected with Maleah and the other talented players, that they'd be a little closer to the Pandas, but that may have been unfair.  Notre Dame, to me, seemed like they wanted to send a message last night, and I believe they did.  You're right, Cooper will be fine, I just expected less one-way traffic last night, but that was probably unfair for me to put on the Jags.    Good post, Big Red.

11pm News update:

Dixie bounces back with a barrage of goals against Scott County whopping them 8-0!  Apologies to the Lady Colonels earlier not recognizing that they played tonight.

Highlands came out dazed and confused for the first 25 min of their game and got smacked in the mouth giving up a goal that the attacker just snuck thru the back line to go down 1-0.

BUT…..

I think that woke them up, Cavacini snuck past their back line within seconds from the kickoff after Beechwood scored to equalize the score 1-1.  Highlands then struck a few min later on a sweet corner kick into Faith Broerings well timed header into the back of the net.  Halftime 2-1.

Second half the Birds went to work quickly striking twice within the first 7 minutes with a goal by Lawhorn and Bramble to make it 4-1, then the Lightning show started to end the game as a 4-1 score.  What a great way to finish the game, totally different then how it started for the Birds.

I think this is a terrific thread!  I don't know much about NKY girls soccer, but I follow it a bit here in Louisville (mostly Manual, Sacred Heart, Assumption, and few others) and pay attention to BG and Greenwood around Bowling Green.

You guys have a great thread here.  My daughter played for Javanon with many of the Sacred Heart girls before she decided to play lacrosse full time right before she got to high school.  SHA has some players, but soccer is funny in that you just need to continue to get better and you never know in a one game winner-take-all scenario.

I coach Freshman Girls Lacrosse at Manual and we went up to NDA this spring for a game and I mention that to say they treated us very well and played with good sportsmanship.  Not all areas do that.

Sorry to threadjack a bit, but wanted to let you know I enjoyed reading your thread.

Good luck to your teams this year!

Beechwood better than the Birds expected?

Holy Cross took care of business beating district rival Holmes 10-0 on Monday.  They were able to get a lot of younger players some varsity time.  They followed that with a 3-0 victory over Scott Wed.  Tonight's game against Calvary was cancelled for weather.  Next up Villa on Monday in the All A regional semi finals.
