Confederate Flag issue between David School and Allen Central

Featured Replies

David School has issued statements, refusing to play Allen Central as a result of the confederate flag. Per the article, it has been forwarded to the KHSAA, for their action.

Here is a link and you thoughts on the issue, not personal attacks against any people involved.

Especially upsetting to the David School's team, Pillersdorf said, was when a black player was up for a foul shot and "they were waving the Confederate flag at him."

For all those who say it celebrates your heritage, you've got these people that cause folks like me to wonder.

The fact that AC's students do not look at the flag as having anything to do with race is a positive. However, it doesn't erase history and continuing to have the flag certainly shows no concern for those who are offended by it. To say "it was long ago" or "its about heritage" is simply putting your head in the sand as to what the great majority of us think of when we see the flag.

I applaud the David School for standing up for its students.

I just read in The Daily Independent that the David School has informed Allen Central that it will not honor its contract for a January 19, 2007 game because Allen Central is called the "Rebels" and sometimes displays a Confederate flag.

Some will find a lot of merit in the action. However, since both are located in Floyd County and since Allen Central is rather well known around those parts, I would have thought that, if the motivation were pure, the game would not have been scheduled in the first place.

Adding to the "intrigue" is the fact that the AD and coach of The David School is Ned Pillersdorf. Pillersdorf is a well known leftwing attorney who has made a reputation from being active in civil rights, civil liberties, and related causes operating from the liberal point of view.

If nothing else, a forfeit and payment for breach of contract may be better for The David School than would be another humiliating encounter on the playing floor. Plus, look at the publicity. The AP has already picked up the story. Can Larry King and Oprah be far behind?

What is Allen Centrals nickname? If their nickname is the Rebels then I have no problem with waving the Confederate flag. But if not then the flag needs to be put away

Was Allen Central called the Rebels when the game was scheduled?

I don't know what their nickname is, but I do the term "Rebel" is not synonomous with the Confederate flag. The Minute Men were "Rebels" in the Revolutionary war, for instance.

Do these fans wave the confederate flag when a white player is taking a shot? That is point to ask, as well. If used selectively, and not inclusively, then there is a question of the intention of waving the flag.

Play AC and lose by 40 or don't play and just lose. Don't use the school as a sounding board for someone else'e agenda. That's my take on the whole mess.

Allen Central has been the Rebels every since I can remember.

When was the contract signed? Did they play last year?

Per the KHSAA website, their nickname is Rebels.

I am sure they did. This is just another oppertunity for the left wing to take a stab at someone else and their own civil liberties because they don't agree with them. It is not like AC just beacame the Rebels. Just another oppertunity taken by someone to draw unwarranted attention to Eastern KY. Sometimes we do it to ourselves and claim that we are protecting others.
