December 22, 200619 yr Read an article in the Enquirer this morning and the coach was quoted that the PLAYERS voted unanimously. They were especially upset when the flag was waved when a black player was shooting. I applaud these players for taking their free speech right and turn it right back on those who hide racism behind a southern heritage argument. http://news.nky.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20061222/NEWS0102/612220385 The team of eight players, including one black student, at the private David School in Floyd County made a unanimous decision this week to boycott the game, said Ned Pillersdorf, an attorney and the school's athletic director and coach. The players believe Allen Central High School's displays of Confederate emblems are a form of taunting, which is forbidden by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, Pillersdorf said Thursday. Pillersdorf said his team took the vote after observing the recent publicity about the issue and talking about their last game against Allen Central, in which fans held up large Confederate flags. Especially upsetting was when a black player was up for a foul shot and "they were waving the Confederate flag at him," Pillersdorf said. As much as those who support the Confederate Flag like to tout their freedom of choice and speech, they should have ZERO problems with this action. They are simply saying that if AC is going to continue with this, they want to be no part of it.
December 22, 200619 yr Maybe Allen Central can find a new symbol, beside the Confederate flag, to display their heritage and school pride. Our school has played the Owen County Rebels for years, and for the life of me, I can't ever remember seeing a Confederate flag at one of their sporting events.
December 22, 200619 yr Does the flag symbolize racism? Call me a redneck if you want, but I don't think the flag EVER was a symbol for racism. I know I'm going to catch it with this...If you are offended by that piece of cloth, you're looking to be offended. If you're offended by that piece of cloth, you're probably offended by the color of ones skin. After all, this has become the United States of The Offended.
December 22, 200619 yr I still can not believe that some AC students did this without no regard to race.
December 22, 200619 yr I wonder if there are any BGPers who have ever witnessed this first hand at an Allen Central game, any game? Third hand information is worthless.

So the white piece of cloth that the KKK wears is not a symbol of racism?

The only time I ever saw Allen Central was a few years back when they were in the All A State Tournament in Richmond. They did have Confederate flags and the band played Dixie quite a bit. I don't know if that's their school song or not. But I remember Frankfort was in the tournament that year and I noticed several of their fans seemed to be bothered by it.

December 22, 200619 yr Seemed to be? What did you witness that formed this opinion? Some of them were pointing to the AC section, shaking their heads. Maybe I misinterpreted their thoughts, but they appeared to be annoyed by the flags and the song.

If this were the case I would hope the school officials would notice. I wonder if there is any diversity within the Allen Central High School?

You must have missed the Civil Rights movement, the KKK rallys and the premise behind "State's Rights." (So we can keep our slaves as we see fit.)
December 22, 200619 yr So the white piece of cloth that the KKK wears is not a symbol of racism? That piece of cloth is not the flag in question. That's a whole different thread. IMO when the confederate flag was first stiched together it did not symbolize racism, that's all I'm saying. White, black, yellow or red, we are all too easily offended in this country. If I were the David School I'd be more offended by the way my team was getting beat.
