Calipari to Texas?

Doesn't UofL still pay Denny? They did for many years after he "retired."

They did for a while, I’m not sure about now.

That wasn’t the “dumb” I was referring to. More of them paying him $9 million per, and actually calling it a lifetime contract... Could potentially put them in a “tough spot” financially whenever Cal is gone and they are negotiating with the next guy, but I doubt it will.

Wow!! That is the craziest thing ever!!

Other schools have paid coaches to be "Ambassadors" after they retired.

Was unaware of that situation, who were they?

No matter how close Calipari would ever be to Texas or not, any journalist that wants to write an article about it is definitely going to include Calipari, probably use his picture and probably put his name in the title of the piece.  Clicks matter.

Urban Meyer prior to taking the Jaguars job was “associate AD” at OSU which essentially meant he just showed up at fundraising events for the athletic department. That’s a role he could have kept at Ohio State for as long as he wants it. It’s not uncommon.

Thought there might be more than just Meyer, must be very few.

I believe that Steve Spurrier serves as an ambassador for Florida in the same capacity that Urban Meyer used to.

Probably a handful of others out there too, but I have no clue how many.

I believe Bowden did it also. There are only  a few coaches that could even be considered. 1) The coach has to leave on their own terms not be fired 2) someone that the fan base (donors) love and 3) someone that is done completely with coaching. #1 eliminates most coaches, as all but a very few don't get to end their career on their own terms, most are fired or forced out and have no interest in working for the school any more.

My point is that while it is not common, it isn't unprecedented either.

Go ahead Cal, make the move please.

Spurrier does serve as an ambassador for the Gators football team and athletic department.  He did the same for a few years at South Carolina after he stopped coaching there.
