JDEaston Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Final after last night's game was suspended. A night's rest and fresh legs worked to Boyd's advantage as they cut the lead to 9 early in the fourth. Boyd County has a really solid team but one thing I've noticed in their play in the AIT as well as against Ashland is they struggle in the second half against quick, athletic teams.
addout Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Final. Completion of yesterday's suspended game.
16thBBall Fan Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 A good bit closer than I expected. That’s within upset range down the road.
addout Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 A good bit closer than I expected. That’s within upset range down the road. I'm all but certain that if the game had been completed last night that Ashland would have won with a score of something close to 75-50. Ashland had taken control of the game and Boyd County was struggling. Postponing the game gave Boyd the opportunity to regroup and allowed Ashland to cool off. That being said I think that Ashland will have to play well to get a win in their next meeting.
16thBBall Fan Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 That’s probably true I think they are about 20 points difference in what I’ve saw.
JDEaston Posted January 12, 2020 Author Posted January 12, 2020 A good bit closer than I expected. That’s within upset range down the road. While I won't ever rule out an upset and someone in the 16th will surely hand Ashland a loss at some point. But imo, Ashland would have won this one by 25-30 had it been finished last night. Ashland, in close games has shown that they are a second half team. Coach Mays makes halftime adjustments and turns the press up, they seem to have an extra gear that most teams they've played simply don't have, Boyd included. At the time this one was suspended Ashland was on a 19-6 run and Boyd was falling apart, then they started falling down. Starting with fresh legs today essentially allowed Boyd to play like they did in the first half last night.
JDEaston Posted January 12, 2020 Author Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) Why was it suspended? Condensation on the floor. The floor had recently been resurfaced as well so that probably didn't help. For anyone that doesn't know Ashland's campus all 7 buildings are built on stilts that go down to bedrock, due to the ground below them being mined years ago. I'm not an engineer but the theory is that when the gym is packed you're going to have some moisture just due to the number of people is a small gym, then add the outside air below the gym and it multiplies the condensation. For what it's worth Ashland had people with large push broom/mops trying to dry any condensation anytime there was a stoppage of play but it didn't seem to work last night. Edited January 12, 2020 by JDEaston More information.
addout Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 The score at halftime was Ashland up 32-29 but in the first 6 minutes and 56 seconds of the 3rd quarter Ashland out scored Boyd 17-2 having ran off 17 straight points before Boyd managed to score. At that time it looked like there was no stopping Ashland leading 49-31, but floor conditions caused the game to be postponed allowing Boyd to regroup and Ashland to cool off. Boyd outscored Ashland 29-22 after the postponement.
The Professor Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 I agree that finishing on Saturday helped Boyd Co because it gave them fresh legs. They were down by 18 and immediately came at Ashland full steam defensively. I actually thought they got away with a few fouls in that defense but the refs were letting both teams play on. They cut into the lead but Ashland was able to hang on. I was impressed with Boyd County’s Stewart and Gibbs. Stewart had 19 points on an assortment of moves and Gibbs had 13 rebounds. And their team is well coached. It will be an interesting game when the Tomcats visit their gym. It’s a long way for me to drive to watch so I guess I won’t be doing that but they announced a few days ago that Ashland’s remaining games are going to be live streamed and I’m glad for that.
Bandit29 Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 This was a very rough game. The officials really let them play, multiple times players were pushed or dove on during lose balls. Would be 15 yard penalties in football.

It's nice that MyTownTV has picked up the rest of the games, they do a great job and it's always a quality high definition feed without any buffering. I wish Mark Swift would allow them to do the football games as well, maybe next year.

I'm not going to complain though. They do all home games for free, Russell basketball and football and has done baseball, softball before. Mytowntvhd does do Russell soccer some.
tcjkbt Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Best Ashland team since Larry Conley played in the early in 60s?
JDEaston Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 Best Ashland team since Larry Conley played in the early in 60s? Likely not. But they are a win away from reaching their best start in a storied history. They wont be able to top the best start though as is was an undefeated, national championship season in 1928.
