I can see your point. Hicks led 5A in passing yardage and is probably the one guy that Conner couldn't win without. I think I would give the edge to someone that has his hands on every offensive play. Again, taking nothing away from Mayer, but I think Cov Cath probably wins every game except LaSalle and Lex Cath without him. Maybe one of those instances where they could have been co-players of the year.

I’m not. Reese Smith was the correct choice.

 

I have not seen Reese Smith play this year. So, I can't disagree with you. But all that I have read and heard is that Beau Allen is a lock for Mr. Football. So, that is what has me surprised. I suppose it is possible for a player to be named Mr. Football in the same year that he fails to win District POY but it seems entirely inconsistent.

 

I have seen Beau Allen live and on film. There is no denying that he is a great athlete and a very smart, accurate quarterback. He has a very promising career ahead of him and I wish him nothing but the best. Having said that, I have seen a couple players this year that I personally believe are better candidates for Mr. Football than Mr. Allen. Perhaps Reese Smith should be included among them and, based upon the POY results, I hope he is.

Not that Reese Smith is any slouch but, for the reason you mention, I'm surprised to see that Beau Allen didn't win POY in his District (4A, D5).

It happens all over and every year. In our district Octavius Oxendine is a tremendous player and I’m sure he will have a lot of success at the next level but I don’t think he was their best Defensive Lineman. Gavin George was the best player I saw all season and I saw quite a few teams play.

Coach Hampton, Coach of the year in 2a district 8? I guess he did have the best player and did score a lot of points playing a very competitive and challenging schedule.

IMO Octaviaus and Resse are key components on teams that have beat the daylights out of some of the other players mentioned in this post. Maybe this award factors in who is still alive. I don’t know what Boyle has or North Hardin but IMO the scoreboard plays a role in these awards.

Beau is very good and very talented but I disagree. I hope he has an outstanding career at UK.

Who votes on these and who determines who the nominees are?

 

It’s the Kentucky Football Coaches Association, so I’m going to guess it is the coaches.

There is no nomination process. All district coaches vote for the POY and all schools are included in that vote, regardless if they are KFCA members or not. To be COY or to vote for the COY, the school/coach must be a member of the KFCA.

 

Once the POY & COY are selected, the coaches across the state will vote for COY of the year and POY of the year for the each class. We are in the process of doing that right now.

Congrats to Coach Nevels at Holmes, well deserved.

Well if that’s the case give it to Lavell or Wimberly. Or Campbell. If you take Oxendine off that team they probably still win district. Take Lavell Wright or Maine Wimberly off and I don’t think they do.

I hope North gets a chance to clash with Male, Trinity, and St X.
