It's funny that you would say that...a friend of mine who bartended at Margarita Maggies in Naples (Dickie V's hometown)...met him, and was talking with him about the same thing...He said that sure he has bad days, doesn't feel well, etc...but that it's a job, and he forced himself to look or act the role, and when he does that, it takes over his emotions, and suddenly he is indeed in that good mood....I have done this ever since that, and it truly helps when you are down and out at work, etc...

Vitale doesnt have an anti-UK bias, he usually doesnt come out agaist anybody. Packer on the other hand is always critical of UK even when we were on top in the 90s.

I do enjoy listening to him call a game. Except when he is calling a SEC game and all he talks about is teams from the ACC. Besides that he is great.

If I had my choice, I wouldn't want Vitale calling a game I was really interested in. He rambles off the subject too much, especially when he hasn't done his homework.

 

He kind of reminds me of a bunch of little kids shooting hoops at halftime of a basketball game. Full of unabashed enthusiasm and sometimes entertaining to watch....but lacking direction.

He may know a ton about the game of basketball in general, but there have been many times that he's gotten lost when discussing the teams that he's covering (unless of course, it's an ACC team). This is when he starts rambling about things other than the teams involved in the game at hand; ie some rule he wants to see changed, college football, the coach's wives, etc., etc.

 

But I guess I'm the only person that's ever noticed that...

He is good for the game; he's a great ambassador. I just think others are better commentators.

Sure, his enthusiasm is great. But he just grates on me after a while.

I love his passion for the game. Sure he can get on your nerves, but I love his attitude towards the kids, coaches and the game.

Dickie V is the best there is, the best there was, and the best ever will be in that profession. Thats the best way to put it, I think if anything he adds more excitement to the game.

Yes, DV is pro-ACC, and he's very pro-Notre Dame (I think one or more of his kids attend). Yes, his "awesome babys" and "freeze-its" are stale.

 

And he is slowing down a little. He appears on the Mike and Mike radio show nearly every Monday, and he almost always sounds like he's coughing up a lung. I thought he sounded pretty hoarse last night during the IU-Duke game.

 

But who else can be as immediately identified with a sport - especially a college sport - who is not a famous player or coach (sure, DV was a coach, but he sure wasn't famous as a coach)? Dickie V IS college basketball. Nobody promotes the sport and the kids who play the sport like he does.

 

Dickie V is as much a cultural icon as he is a college basketball commentator. Watch what happens when he shows up on virtually any campus. He is literally mobbed - by kids 40 or 50 years younger than him. It's a love fest.

 

Is he the best or the smoothest to call a game? Not by a long shot. But I cannot honestly say that he takes away from my enjoyment of the game; and I certainly appreciate all that he has done for college basketball.
