Insight's letter to NFL Fans about the NFL Network

Recommended Posts

To our NFL fans:

At Insight, we understand that you are disappointed that we are not carrying the football games that are being aired on the NFL Network. We are disappointed too. Insight was one of the first cable companies that agreed to carry the NFL Network when it launched in 2004, and we agreed to pay them a significant license fee per customer for the channel.

After the agreement was signed, the NFL Network secured the rights to a handful of late-season games on Thursday and Saturday nights. However, they decided that the fee we were paying for the network was not big enough and they would only allow us to carry the games if we agreed to a rate 4 times higher than the already aggressive rate we pay for the channel. But it doesn’t stop there; they also want to charge the new higher fee not just when the games are on TV, but every month, year round. It’s a rate increase that would literally amount to millions of dollars.

We would love to bring these games to our customers, so we offered the NFL Network a substantial additional payment, but the NFL Network rejected it the same day. It simply wasn’t enough to satisfy their greed.

Make no mistake about it, the NFL Network is looking for customers to pay a whole lot more than they currently pay to watch football, while at Insight we are trying to keep the cost of sports programming in line for our customers. That is what this disagreement is about, and that’s why we are not carrying these games.

We stand ready to add the games to our NFL Network package at a rate that should be acceptable to both our customers and the NFL. In the mean time, we will continue to bring you great NFL programming on NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN and NFL On Demand.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you. And, we welcome your comments about the NFL Network. Send them to us at NFL@insightbb.com.

I think most are fine with it, but I think the big deal is that Insight made no attempt to let people know beforehand. If not for you catching it GT, I'd have had no idea until kickoff. Their reasoning is just fine, but timing is not.

And I was just checking out a late night scroll from NFLN. I knew this could be an issue, but never once heard anything from Insight...

Why is the NFLN being so greedy? Also, does this mean networks like Dish network are paying the outrageous price for NFLN?

If they are they haven't passed one penny of the expense onto their subscribers. Initially NFL Network was offered in the Top 180 package (which I don't get) but very quickly it became part of the Top 120 package, yet my bill remains the same. (Much lower than when I had Adelphia, or whatever they call themselves these days.)

The only thing that bothers me is I ordered the sporst package when the college basketball season started, and a big reason I got it was b/c of the Thanksgiving night game and future games on NFLN. I even told them that was why I was getting it and they didn't mention it then.
