One more player for Beechwood that needs to be recognized. Kicker Colin Graman had two field goals, a 22 yarder and a 35 yarder. More impressive were his kickoffs. They had great height and were coming down inside the 5. Those high kickoffs kept Corbin's dangerous return men Longmire and Steely in check. On 6 kickoff returns, Corbin was only able to get past the 20 yard line 1 time. Beechwood won the field position game all night off their kicking game.

 

Also tremendous individual efforts tonight from DT/OT Carter Noah, LG Colby Vanderpool, RB/OLB Mitchell Corts and RB/CB Cole Stammer.

I believe both. It also says a lot about Somerset. Beechwood had Paintsville beat if not for a terrible call by a ref that nullified Beechwood's late go ahead TD against Paintsville. People would be thinking differently if Beechwood were 2-1 with wins over Paintsville and Corbin and had that big loss to Somerset. If not for one official's holding call, that is where we would be.

 

As I said before the game, watching film on Corbin I thought Beechwood would win tonight. I didn't think Beechwood would control the game like they did though. Like people thought about Beechwood coming into tonight, Corbin is good. They just aren't as good as they were the last year or two.

I think it says Beechwood improved and had a great game plan. I think It says Corbin starts a freshman QB who was playing on the road for the first time, which was a tall task regardless of who they played. For the rest of the way for BW they will lose to Cov Cath and I think they win out after that in the regular season. In 2A I feel it’s Somerset, then Mayfield, then Lexington Christian, then Beechwood. A lot can happen between now and December.

 

As for Corbin I think they will be a 6 and 4 team and will get better as the year goes on but won’t be a threat in 4a. I think next year they will be really good.

Cameron Hergott was on target. WR Mason Williams had a lot of big catches, including a 52 yard TD catch and run for Beechwood's first score two minutes into the game. RB Cole Stammer had a good night.

Otherwise, he struggled to see the field. Numerous occasions he had guys wide open, especially the RB in the flat, but he never took his eyes off his first target. He had the TE wide open in the back of the end zone twice. A couple times he had the entire side of the field to run and he’d cut it to the middle. The kid is talented, he just needs to work on seeing the field.

I agree with much of this. Hergott did have some really nice throws last night. He did overlook open receivers on some scrambles. He is still just a couple games into his junior season. I am sure the Beechwood coaches will keep working with him on seeing the field better and he will keep improving. There is always room for improvement. Right now though, he is the Beechwood offense. We did see signs of life in the running game last night, which is encouraging for Beechwood. The Beechwood defense was lights out all night, minus the last drive of the game for Corbin where they scored their touchdown.

The kid threw for over 200 yards and made quite a few big throws on 3rd down to extend drives.

I simply pointed out the one flaw of his game right now.

I have no idea what the situation is, but if I were the coach I would have my game plan around #13. He should touch the ball a lot. Be it on runs, reverses, screens, slants, fades, whatever, you need to get him the ball or not play him. Long kid with speed, some size and a ton of athleticism, that is rarely involved, is a head scratcher. This is high school and when you have what that kids brings athletically, it can win games for you. I was shocked how little he was involved last night.

Longmire had the ball in his hands more than any Corbin player besides the QB.
