Has Mason County improved any? Can they hang with Russell, who was in the regional championship game last season in 3A and lost to eventual state Champion Louisville Central 26-0?

I think Russell will win but by how much is the question? I'm interested in seeing how much Mason County has improved.

I saw a team picture in the local paper of the Mason County football team and it looked like they had about 30 dressed.

Russell will win easily enough for me to take them in the Staying Alive contest.

PS - if you are going to be in attendance, I may also. If so, I'll get you a pop and a popcorn.

I won't be able to make it, but I'll be listening. Good Luck to Mason County this year, but not too much against Russell. I'd really like to see Mason get back to how they were in the early 2000's. Those were some fun games against Mason County.

I just want to see Russell come out and put one in the win column. Gotta start the season off on the right foot. They shouldn't take it for granted that this is going to be an easy win because Mason struggled last year. Approach this game like it's the most important game on the schedule. Because this week, it is. Don't get caught looking ahead to Raceland.

I don't think the coaches would let the team look ahead in any game much less this one. Mason County deserves full attention just on name alone after some of the close games and battles with them over the years.

Russell play by play will be Bobby Allen, just like the last few years when Russell was on 107.1 fm.

Travis Scaggs takes over play by play for Danny Weddle who retired.

Russell/Mason County played some classics back in the early 00s. I'm not sure if Mason is back to that level yet but it is cool to see a rivalry renewed.

They've lost more than they've won recently, but from what I've seen over the years there's always been talent there. @ChiefSmoke did an outstanding job of turning a basketball school into a basketball/football school there for a while. And yes, these two schools have waged their share of classic battles. Despite being in the same district for several years, Russell never really thought of Mason as rival prior to the early 00's. But that changed following a pair of tense, defensive gems in 2002. At that point, you knew Mason was a force to be reckoned with. They moved up a class the following year and Russell didn't see them again until 2007. Mason had Russell's number for a few years before the schools parted ways again. This is their first meeting since 2014.

Travis remains color commentary. JT Teegarden who was play-by-play for Bracken county is taking over play by play calling.

We WANTED Russell to be our rival because we had so much respect for them and they were so good. But, we had to win a few to make it a rivalry.

Year round.... Russell drove much of what we did and we were always talking about ....FLATWOODS! Love that place. Love Ivan and those coaches there.

Not sure it will ever happen, but would love to play in Flatwoods, October, cold, wind, rain, ONE MORE TIME.

I am a big fan of Coach Maynard and Coach Thomas. Love both programs.... but definitely pulling for the Royals at home on Friday night!

Would you settle for late November in the semifinals? Wouldn't that be something?
