Beechwood 49 Covington Catholic 48

Big win by the Tigers. After the Cooper games, I don’t think many expected this. Personally thought it would be too physical for the Tigers and the Colonels size like agaisnt Cooper would be the determining factor. However, the Tigers battled tonight, fighting through rubs and grabs! First half 50/50 balls appeared to go Beechwoods way. 3rd quarter nearly ever 50/50 ball went the Colonels way allowing them to build a 7 point lead. Tigers battled back in the 4th.

Tigers gave up very few easy baskets and every layup that was missed by the Colonels was contested. Late in the 4th you expected the Colonels to hold the ball. They did run clock for a short time and then would attack and miss a contested shot in the paint. Schilling’s box score was probably not impressive but he held his own on the block all night against guys 3 to 5” taller than he.

Did the Tigers benefit from some home cooking? Maybe, but if you watch many Covcath games objectively an official could call a foul on Covcath on nearly every possession and they do not because it’s their “style” of play. Tonight was no different in that aspect.

Great effort by both teams.

Bieger and Disken matchup will be fun to watch next year and possibly 2 more games this year. Two guys who leave it all on the floor on every possession and play with passion!

Congrats to Coach Goetz and the Tigers. The bottom line is all teams in the 9th had better be ready to battle because there are 4-5 teams that can win the region and I’ve changed my opinion of this being a 2 horse race from a month ago when I saw what Cooper did to Beechwood.

Several keep saying Mayer is coming back and some say he isn’t. Frankly, one thing is certain, it takes a while to get in “basketball” shape especially when nearly the all the season has been missed but maybe he helps and maybe he doesn’t but I don’t think any of the other top 4 teams are going to back down if he’s there or not.

Kudos to the Tigers on a big win.

Davin’s return is probably more important than Mayer. Not sure Mayer helps any of their weaknesses. He’s another big banging, playing tough defense who wont shoot outside of 6 feet. They have plenty of those guys on the floor now. Tough to win against good teams when you only have one kid consistently looking to shoot outside of the paint. I don’t see Michael helping in that area. Sure he’ll have an impact but it’s not like CJ Frederick is returning to action to knock down jumpers.

Nice win, Tigers!

Small gym but the atmosphere was absolutely electric. Last night was a great example of competitive high school basketball.

I agree-Davin’s return will have a bigger impact.

This was a ugly game at times, but man it was high school basketball at its best. Great environment.

10. No gambling, bookmaking or point spread comments are allowed in any of the high school forums. Figures of speech that use gambling terms may not be used in any of the high school forums. All gambling comments are permitted in the non-high school forums as long as they do not involve any high school sports, students, or student-athletes.

There's just something that seems a little weird about this year's CovCath team. They can go out some nights and look like a team that is primed and ready to defend their state title, and then another night, they score 6 points in the first quarter and 7 points in the fourth quarter against a decent Beechwood team.

This was a tough loss for the Colonels, but I think the return of Davin and the addition of Mayer will help this team a lot more than people realize. Yes, Mayer isn't a "bucket-getter" but with the size of this team already, he's just another guy to throw into the fold who is very calm around the rim and can add another dimension on offense. Davin I think remains to be seen a little bit, but he will certainly help open up the offense if he can knock down shots.

Cov Cath needs more ball handling, and some better perimeter shooting.
