B-Ball-fan Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 It is without doubt the biggest and most anticipated regular season game in the 9th Region this basketball season. The game is being played at Covington Catholic and will likely sell out before the doors open. Big time Friday night prime time basketball at its finest, and I know that I can't wait. Both teams seem to be riding high playing some of their best ball as of late. CovCath is basically at full strength minus Michael Mayer who we still don't know when he'll be seen in action. He's always on the bench with the team, so one can only assume that his game is in the works. Perhaps they don't even want to play him in this game to keep him as a wild card down the road when these two teams will likely meet again in the 9th Region Tournament. CovCath has been playing solid team ball lead by the super energized, and highly talented Grant Diskin surrounded by his working bees of tall trees in Thelen, Fleek, and Green not to mention the solid play of Moser. Right now it appear that the Colonels play about 8 players, but their bench is much deeper if need be. On the other side we have an undeniably tough as nails, defensively solid Cooper who without doubt boast some of the strongest players in the region both in body and talent. As I write this I've not heard whether or not the Jags will have yet the services of Blaine Walters, but he is certainly one of, if not their best player, but as we saw the other night against Simon Kenton even without him they had no trouble dismantling a pretty decent Pioneers team. Still coach Sully is rich with talent, and can without pause rely on the highly talented TJ Deere, the versatility of the big horse in Micheal Spencer, the strength of Ty Houston rounded out by such decent players as Caleb Hampton, Josh Baker, and Kevein Centers. Forgive me if I'm missing any significant Jag roll players. Personally I'm having trouble figuring who has this game, but I'm certain that it will be a dandy. I lean toward thinking that Cooper's "D" could stymie the Colonels yet I'm confident in CovCath's teamwork ethic, and efficient offensive sets that I believe if there's a team in the 9th who can handle the pressure it would be them. What you say... are you feeling more confident in one team over the other, because I certainly am not. My crystal ball is cloudy and murky telling me I'm just gonna have to wait and see for myself. What's your crystal ball saying?

KOTU Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 If they play 10 times, Cooper wins 8-9. CCH would have to have the shooting night of their lives to grind out a win. Cooper is so strong defensively, they take you out of your normal game and force you to play what they give you. No disrespect intended here for CCH...they are VERY good. Cooper is simply better...senior talent, well coached, strong kids.
Mr. Sixer Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Won't make any predictions but will note that CCH is a very very tough place to play just simply because it's so small and it gives them a huge home court advantage with their fans. However, if Cooper does what they do defensively AND puts out similar production offensively that they did vs. SK they will win this game. The Jags have learned how to win without a notable superstar or big name player and frankly this has them playing even better defense and better TEAM basketball than in recent years past. One thing for sure, even though both may be missing a key player, these two teams and coaches bring out the best in one another. Should be a great game.
JackieMoon Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 “Any Given Sunday” Here are some stats for you numbers fiends: These teams have had two common opponents: St. Henry and Connor • CCH beat St. Henry by 16 and held them to 47 • Cooper beat St. Henry by 15 (twice) and allowed 60 and 50 • CCH beat Connor by 15 and held them to 39 • Cooper beat Connor by 20 and held them to 41 Team Stats • Cooper allows 45.2 PPG (through 16 games) – 2nd in KY • CCH allows 46.9 PPG (through 17 games) – 4th in KY • CCH’s Average Margin of Victory is 13 PPG which is 25th in KY. • Cooper is not ranked in Margin so they are below 8.8 PPG • CCH Shoots 52.8% from the field – 1st in KY • Cooper is not ranked in shooting so they are below 47% • CCH Shoots 38.8% (on 209 shots) from 3 – 13th in the state • Cooper Shoots 35.4% (on 243 shots) from 3 – 44th in the state • Cooper brings down 35.1 Rebounds Per Game – 28th in the state • CCH is not ranked in Rebounds so they are below 33 per game • CCH has one loss in KY • Cooper has two losses in KY • These teams have played 5 times in the last 2 years with Cooper winning 2 and CCH winning 3 My Predictions • Lots of Zones Defense (unfortunately) – Cooper will likely play more than CCH • An intense sellout crowd • Low scoring with neither team scoring more than 60 and likely closer to 50 • Neither team at full strength (Cooper w/o Walter and CCH w/o Davin and Mayer) • Some stall ball by Cooper • Both teams holding back on showing some offensive sets until regions • Cooper will shoot more 3’s while CCH will depend on more 2’s • Someone complaining about officiating afterwards (LOL) Honestly, I think it’s a coin toss as per who wins. CCH likely has the edge at home and with Cooper playing wo Walter.
The Double Deuce Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 I think CovCath wins by 6-8, the winner MIGHT get to 50, the loser certainly won't. Will feel very GCL'ian. Grind it out, low scoring, great defense, two big and rowdy student sections, and a ton of passion in the building. Will be (if it isn't already) sold out. I completely disagree with the sentiment that Cooper would win 8 or 9 out of 10, but I guess we'll save that debate for this weekend when Round 1 is in the books. I love Sully, and I would put him in the best handful of coaches in the Commonwealth...but this is the one game on the Jags' schedule where he is matched by another of one of those handful of best coaches. I love Sully's demeanor and his obvious relationship with his kids, but Ruthsatz's two state Championships are obviously very impressive. Will be a great one.
KOTU Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 I typically agree with the vast majority of your posts Double D...including the comment that Scully and Ruthsatz are both great coaches. All the hype and predictions will be over after tomorrow night. We can definitely agree that it will be a great game!
4 Quarters Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Wow, I hope I can get all of this material read and the numbers crunched so I can pick a winner before tip off. Might be over kill on the analyzing. LOL
Big Fundamental Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Cooper by less than 10. With Walters, I might go 10 or more. Come the region, maybe a different story... I believe Ruthsatz is still learning about how to tweak this team to get its greatest offensive potential.
kyag Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 Not that it makes any difference, but my son who has played against both teams says he thinks Cooper is better. Myself having seen both both play I think Cooper has more kids who can score than Cov Cath, I have no numbers to back this up just my opinion on what I have seen. Also, Deere and Spencer might have something to prove so it will either be a positive as both play a good game or a negative as both push the issue too much and play bad. Davin and Walter being out I feel gives the advantage to Cooper. I’m guessing Boles gets more minutes but how he handles Coopers pressure could be the difference. Im still going with Cooper but after reading the numbers will take the liberty to change my score prediction, Cooper 47 Cov Cath 41.

kyag Posted January 10, 2019 Posted January 10, 2019 I think with Davin out for Cov Cath who steps up handling the ball and running the offense? Who for Cov Cath becomes an outside threat? I like Jalen Boles game, his shooting has improved but he doesn’t have the playing time Davin has gotten this year and last. Blaine Walter being out for Cooper I think Spencer, Houston, and Deere step up in scoring. Especially Deere and Spencer. I look for Centers to get some points along with Baker...Baker might actually be the bigger factor for Cooper. If Thelen or Fleek guard him he is athletic enough to go at them. Houston vs Green in my opinion is even, Deere vs Fleek...I’m going with Deere’s shooting. So, long way of saying it...I think Davin being out for Cov Cath is a bigger loss than Walter being out for Cooper. I would like like to know what happened to both, I don’t recall reading in the threads about their injuries.
