The 3rd quarter is an easy thing to point to, but none of us knows what adjustments were made and if they worked.

 

This isn't a new thing. It's a common theme all season. I'm not the overreacting fan type, and it's something I've been looking at for a while.

 

Football is much too complex to say that the Bengals got outplayed in the 3rd quarter, therefore, their adjustments didn't work.

As we both know, the game is now more about trends than anything. Tape is watched over and over to prepare, and every play in that game is sent to the sidelines and coaches box. Marvin says play calling doesn't matter? Why is Chuck here?

It was 28-7 at half, do you think the Bengals made many adjustments???? Not too many are made after that kind of half.

If they didn't make any changes, it's worse than even I could imagine. You're going to let a 6-2 team break you down, and do nothing to be ready for it? Weak.

SD made some, but we don't know if they worked; every play they called practically worked; we don't know if they were adjustments, plays that weren't called in the 1st half, or the same plays that started working because the Bengals didn't execute.

They had 9 1st and 2nd down situations that failed in the 2nd Half. Teams should be concerned when they get to 3rd down, and against the Bengals, I don't see it. 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 19 are the same animal. That's all on the players? I don't buy it.

I know this is a forum for discussion, but we are all discussing about 1% of the reality of the game, because none of us really knows. We just know the result of 22 players' actions; we wouldn't really be even close unless we saw the game film and reviewed all 22 players like the coaches do.

It's part of my nature to watch as much as I can (I got some crazy looks when I was talking to my buddy about watching the games and studying what was going on yesterday. I think a few were getting annoyed as I called out the mismatches being exploited before the snap. :lol:) before I make claims about letting someone go. From what I have seen, I don't like who we are on D. To me, that's on Chuck...

Chuck is here because his PHILOSOPHY most clearly matches Marvin's, whereas Leslie Frazier's didn't. Simple.

So Marvin is supposed to have ESP, that is a new qualification for a football coach...the poor second half had to do with a lack of execution, nothing more nothing less. The best a coach can do is anticipate, but if coaches were that good, they would call a defense to stifle EVERY PLAY. It is too easy on Monday to talk about the adjustments that SHOULD have been made when the 2nd half has already been played.

It's on the coaches too, not denying that; but a coach can only do so much.

The bottom line, that no one is talking about is the fact that on Justin Smith and John Thornton been here through all of Marvin Lewis's years to fully grasp his system and mature in it. The dominating defenses don't have 1st, 2nd, & 3rd year players donimating the lineup. The Steelers, Buccaneers, Ravens all had mostly veterans that had been in the system awhile! Because of a variety of reasons, the Bengals have not had that.

 

You can blame M. Lewis for Odell's suspension(for drafting him), but the rest is injuries and new faces trying to fill spots.

 

The Bengals either have virtual "newbies" on defense or veterans past their prime.

 

Smith and Thornton are the only seasoned veterans, maybe O'Neal; L. Johnson is getting close.

At first I thought it probably was a good thing that we got rid of Frazier, but now more and more I wish we had him back. Frazier atleast didn't seem to play so laid back like Chuck, and actually tried attacking the offense and blitzed the QB. He just didn't have the athletes on the defense when he was here, like we do now...

I hear that all the time about James but ONeal was beaten as much on Sunday as anyone. And on the key, key play with Gates reception, Joseph was the one beaten.

James did nothing Saturday. He could have at least gotton hurt instead of Oneal.

 

The Joseph play was huge, you are correct. The ball was behind Gates too and Joseph was there, but he couldn't get his hands up.
