How many LB's in the league can play LT man to man? Zero.

How many S's can play Gates man to man? very few

 

1st of all you were assuming the Bengals were playing man to man....How do you know that was the call? Were they in two deep, one deep, cover 0?

Or was it a combination of man and zone?

SD, or any offense, can dictate by formation who is going to cover who.

 

So, assuming the Bengals called a man defense, and Jeanty is responsible for the third widest reciever, and SD comes out with 2 WR's and LT to that side, the defense has to cover their responsibility.

 

Almost no player can cover a receiver completely in man to man with no help; it is a combination of the rush, technique, knowing where the help is, and then making a play on the ball. The teams that do all of that in sync are the good defenses and are successul.

 

There is so much more to it than just a guy covering another guy.

Football is more involved than whoever lines over a receiver covers that guy....you're not really serious about that...are you?

Because since as you say none of us actually no for sure what is called, we then have no clue if it was a bad call or not right? So I guess from what your saying a coach can go 0 and 16 3 straight years, but since we dont know for sure, then maybe that means he is calling the right plays and the team is just not doing it right. So then that coach must not be blamed for the troubles right? W

 

hen you are a coach like it or not if the team is not performing well it is going to fall back on you. And well Chuck has been getting slaughter on third down all year long. And the Bengals have been being outcoached after halftime all year long as well...

So I can't recognize defensive coverages??????????? When Caleb Miller is guarding Gates man that is an obvious mismatch and it's easy to see.

No I want the corners to be better and the safety's to be able to help over the middle and with the TE. If I'm a safety and Gates is my responsibilty and they run PA I read my key. If Gates blocks I play the run, if he releases on a hand off I play the pass.

 

If I'm a TE and Gates is my responsibilty same thing, except if I'm Caleb Miller or Landon Johnson I have no chance from the start. I would like to see KK play some as the nickle back (5th DB) because he's made a lot of big plays this year. Since Dexter been back he doesn't get many plays.

 

I understand that LB's have to cover and we didn't have good match-ups ever, when they had to cover. That wasn't really the problem though. The problem on passing plays was that we couldn't get any pressure, even with a blitz. I thinkt he Bengals should use more CB/safety blitzes and I think Geathers should play a little more on 1st and 2nd downs. If we could get pressure then maybe our LB's could cover a little bit. They still can't tackle though.

Of course coaches should be fired.

 

My whole point is that NONE, absolutely NONE, of us is qualified to make that call and to claim that we know what the mismatches were or blown coverages were; those statements are utterly preposterous.

 

We don't know the hundreds of different formations with shifts and motions plus the responsibilities each player has according to the coverage, of which there are probably over 20, also the different responsibilities with different personnel with the same defensive call.

 

We can't even fathom how complex and detailed all that is.

Again, you're assuming the Bengals are playing straight man; formations, shifts, motion, which hash mark the ball is on, and defensive personnel all affect the call.

 

If the S's are helping over the top with the TE, then CB's are being left alone, who we all agree aren't playing well and need help as well; the Bengals can't sit in one coverage, nor can any NFL team; that is why they have probably 20+.

 

Miller and Johnson are two of the fastest LB's in the league; no LB can cover Gates without a pass rush, line stunt, zone blitz, or LB or DB blitz; Gates is too good; it all goes hand in hand with the rush, and where the help is. Miller and L. Johnson certainly weren't drafted for their size.

 

It is hard for any team to pass rush when the offense is not in an obvious passing down, which teams rarely are against the Bengals.

 

The coaches obviously feel Robinson and Smith are better against the run than Geathers; as poor as the Bengals have played, the coaches still see those guys every day in practice and know a 1000X more football than I do.
