I thought Marvin's strength was supposed to be on the defense???

Featured Replies

He is in his 5th season and has the defense made any noticable improvements over before he got here?

Don't give me the Odell is out argument because he was the one that chose to draft a LB that had question marks in his background.

The Pollock injury that I will give but other coaches have injuries in their defense and the defense doesn't take a huge drop. And was Pollock that dominating before his injury. It was not like we lost a player that had been producing like Merriman.

I have expressed my opinion on this in the game thread, but I don't blame it on Marvin.

But isn't Marvin the one drafting and signing the free agents? Isn't he the one responsible for bringing in such players? And he has brought in Sam Adams?

I'm not defending Marvin, not at all. I'm saying maybe his defense in Baltimore was more the result of the All-World personnel that was there, and not his scheme. His defense in Washington, off the top of my head, wasn't too hot. Of course, my memory could be skewed by how bad Spurrier was when in the NFL.

Carson Palmer. Rudi Johnson. Chad Johnson. TJ Houshmenwhatever. Chris Henry.

Suddenly, Mr. Defense Marvin Lewis is coaching an offensive juggernaut.

Compare that with Brian Billick. He was an offensive guru with Moss, Carter, Smith and company. Then he goes to the Ravens and wins a Super Bowl with next to no offense.

Also, how long did it take another defensive guru, Tony Dungy, to improve the Colts D? And even they have struggled this year.

The Bengals have to get a D-line or their defense will never be able to stop anyone.

The D-line was not the problem yesterday and has been solid all year really with the exception of 2 bad games.

I don't think so, but you're entitled to your opinion. The Bengals have two glaring problems...

1) They struggle mightily to stop the run

2) They have no one who can consistently pressure the QB

...the first place I look to solve those problems is the D-line.

Again, is not part of "In Marvin We Trust" being that he is responsible for the drafting of players and the signing of free agents to improve the defense? And has he been able to do that?

I must admit that I thought with his reputation, he would have been able to bring in more good defensive players than he has.

Only 2 backs have gone for 100+ yards on them this season.

I agree. But, sometimes is doesn't happen overnight. Again, look at Indy...it took Dungy until last year to get a solid defense, and now even they have regressed. That wouldn't lead me to question his knowledge of defense though. Give Marvin some time. He has completely turned this franchise around in 3 years.....I think he's earned a little good will.

And yet their rush defense is 23rd in the NFL...;)

But, hey, it's better than the pass defense...it's 28th.

And, they're tied for 19th in the league in sacks.

I'll stick with my opinion that an upgrade on the D-line would go further toward making the defense better than anything else. It would free up LB's to make plays, and it would make the secondary a lot better if they didn't have to 1) play in the box to stop the run, and 2) cover for an eternity because opposing QB's can clip their nails while standing in the pocket.

That all sounds goood but we don't have LB's to make plays right now.

This is his 4th season and has the defense progressed? Who has he added to the team? Chad, TJ, Rudi was already here. On defense what players are contributors that he has brought?

Well, I guess it depends on whether you think D-line or LB's are more important. I say it's the D-line. If you get beat up front, then you usually get beat on the scoreboard. Even if we had LB's who could make plays, they would be hindered by a poor D-line.
