The Boone County football job is open.

Who would you like to see apply?

Is it a job anyone should want?

It’s tough to turn around a program with 5-6 years in a row of abject futility. Their district situation does not lend itself to success. Best wishes to whoever wants a huge challenge.

@theguru, you got your information pretty early. I heard a rumor the day before. Of course, this same rumor was bantered about last year too. However, the source on Tuesday seemed credible. Your announcement is the first public announcement I've seen.

Coach Steele was very good to my son. He enjoyed playing for him over the last 4 years.

As to who may become the next Head Coach of the Boone County Rebels, I don't have any names to share.

I think it could be a guy who is an assistant on a successful team locally. There are guys who have done well as assistants. They get a reputation among opposing coaches as a guy who is tough to prepare for or always has a good defense etc. and they may be looking for their next opportunity. Mike Woolf comes to mind as an example of this. He built a reputation during his time as the DC at Ryle. He received his opportunity at Campbell County when they came calling last year.

I think it may be a person like that who takes the Boone County job. I hope the administration is searching far and wide for the best available candidate, but that doesn't always work out. Unfortunately, we had that at Boone.

Whoever gets the nod, I hope he can convince the Boone County school administration to redraw the district lines so that Boone can take in one of the areas with faster population growth. That would held get new talent to Boone High School.

I wish the Rebels well in the search.

Did Eckstein come on board mid last season? Any chance he’s headed back to the sideline as a HC?

He did join the staff mid-season of 2018. He is a delightful person. He and Coach Steele are longtime friends and coached together many years under Owen Hauck. I think Coach Eckstein came on board to help a friend and NOT so that he could succeed Coach Steele.

I wonder if Coach Eckstein would be willing to stay on staff next year to help the new head coach.

Does Bryson Warner want another crack at being a HC?

What is his coaching resume' and where is he now? Cov Cath?

He was the HC at Ryle for many years and brought them back to the top. He's an assistant at Cov Cath now I believe.

Redraw the district lines? Why? They have the majority of the city of Florence still don’t they? I would be curious to hear what areas should be going to Boone that they don’t already have.

It's not a serious suggestion, though there are some kids that go to RA Jones MS and wind up at Ryle, for instance. It would have been nice to have Jackson Saladin at Boone. Just me thinking about the neighborhoods that Boone has and all the new growth happening south and west of the city. Where you have new growth there will be new families that represent up and coming talent for years to come. Many of the neighborhoods surrounding Boone County high school have been there since the 60's and 70's. Those families had kids in high school back in the 70's and 80's. Older people live in those homes now and their kids are grown and moved away. There are few children there. So, this in turn means the talent pool available for Boone sports has dwindled and there is less of a chance of new families moving in.

It was an offhand comment not meant to be taken very seriously. And definitely not intended to steer the discussion away from the topic at hand, which is who may be the new coach at Boone.

There is one name that has been mentioned in this thread. I have heard this person mentioned in this context before.

Assuming you're talking about Eric Turner here.

I think he would be a very solid candidate at Boone County. He's definitely been a success story at Lloyd in his 6 years there. It's my understanding that he is he's pretty closely knit into the community in the Erlanger-Elsmere Schools, enough to the point that I don't know how easy he would necessarily be to lure away to Boone, but it may well be doable.

I keep wondering what would have happened at Boone County had they not run off Jeff Griffith in the middle of his trying to institute a platooning system for the Rebels. Coach Griffith headed back down south and took a Warren East team that went 1-9 in 2015, then the Raiders went 3-8 in Griffith's first season, and then 6-5 in the past two seasons.

Oh well. Spilled milk.
