December 9, 20187 yr So you guys are saying that if Notre Dame goes 11-1 and the teams on their 2018 schedule are playing at a level that they usually play at then they wouldn't have the resume to get in the playoffs? In most years 5-7 of the teams on their schedule would be ranked with no FBS teams on there. That's as strong as anyone's schedule.
December 9, 20187 yr But that’s not the point. You can say the playoff should be expanded all you want. The fact of the matter remains is we have at least 5 more years of 4 teams. For at least the next 5 years, ND is doing a disservice to themselves by having to go undefeated to win a national championship. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc. don’t have to worry about that. Even in 5 years if the playoff expands to 8 teams, the first round will likely be played on the home field of the higher seed. Notre Dame will still be at a disadvantage by having to go on the road. ND not being in a conference is just stubbornness. I disagree. And most of the time those teams do go undefeated. If they don't and ND does, still 3 more slots to fill. Be real, you're not arguing for the Irish. I mean who would, they're in the playoffs.

I mean who would, they're in the playoffs. What do you mean most of the time those teams go undefeated? We’ve only had 3 undefeated teams in the 4 years prior to this year and non of them won the championship. The 3 undefeated teams we had this year was an anomaly. Going undefeated and winning a title is relatively rare in college football.
December 9, 20187 yr Again, OSU lost one game. Where are they this year? Yep, Rose Bowl and out of the playoffs. For the love of all that’s good RTS. Ohio State is in the Rose Bowl because ND went undefeated. That’s the only way ND gets in. So in the 1 year they do go undefeated they’ll keep out 1 loss conference champs. That’s never been what we’re discussing. We’re discussing what happens to ND when they lose a game. Going undefeated is pretty rare in college football. I just don’t think any team should hinge their chances on going undefeated. That’s just silly to me? Do you not want ND to have a better chance to win a championship year in and year out? I just don’t understand the perspective you’re coming from.
December 9, 20187 yr Oh, it's been said, not so much on here but it's been said. I listen to a lot of college football talk and read a lot of content. I’ve yet to see one person say ND shouldn’t have been in the playoffs.

ND plays an FBS school every game of the year. If the SEC has a title game it just makes up for most their joke of a non conference schedule. They have also allowed teams in who didnt make their conference championship. This specific year ND could have been in trouble. But in years when their schedule was top 10 they could make it with 1 loss.

Dude, people on here have talked about how no matter who they play, they'll get blown out. If that's not saying they don't belong I'd like to know what is.

Let me guess, you'll disagree. I won't respond anymore though after this post on the matter, nothing I can say will change your mind and you certainly aren't going to change mine.

This specific year ND could have been in trouble. But in years when their schedule was top 10 they could make it with 1 loss. The thing you are leaving out is the committee has explicitly said that in the event of two equal teams, conference championships are a tiebreaker. No matter what NDs schedule is, it’s never going to be significantly better than any other power 5 program. Whether you like it or not conference championships matter to the committee. You can say well it was against Northwestern or Pitt, but the conference championship isn’t an award you win for beating the best team from the other division. It’s a title you earn by being the best team in your conference. It’s a qualifying statement that gives the committee some framework to judge teams that they deem as equal. When you have teams that are equal (played a power 5 schedule and have the same number of losses) a conference championship is going to be the tiebreaker. I don’t know what else to say other then that’s just the way it is. The committee clearly states that in their guidelines. A 1 loss ND is never going to get in over a 1 loss power 5 conference champ unless they happen to have a head to head win over that team and even then it’s debatable according to the committee. Hate the system all you want, just don’t shoot the messenger for telling it like it is.

If that's not saying they don't belong I'd like to know what is. Colin Cowherd is your expert on college football? Cowherd? Seriously? If you take anything Cowherd says seriously then I’m not sure what else to say. I actually enjoy Cowherd because I understand what he is. He has no expertise, he has no insight into these teams, he has no special access. He’s just your regular dude at the bar who loves to get people fired up with hot takes. When he said stuff about ND he’s just trying to get fans riled up. Nothing else.

I honestly agree with most of what you are saying. Usually a 1 lost Notre Dame would get left out currently. Because while Notre Dame is at home, other teams have a chance to make a last impression on the committee. Which like it or not, people do look at the last games. In the history of college football teams have been able to get away with a early lost, but if they lose late in the year. That lost seems to be held against them more. So if another one lost team looks great in a conference championship game. Chances are the committee would see that, and probably jump them. With that said it also will depend on where Notre Dame is at as a program. So by chance Notre Dame wins it all this year. Then goes on to consistently show they are a top team like a Clemson and Bama has lately. Then a 1 lost Notre Dame would possibly get the benefit of the doubt even with 1 lost since their schedule is usually tough. So it honestly just will come down to where Notre Dame is as a program in the future to how much of an impact 1 lost will have.

Let’s say for instance Alabama went independent for whatever reason, they would likely be considered as a 1 loss non conference champ over a 1 loss conference champ simply because they are Alabama. Some people would say that’s not fair, but personally I don’t have an issue with that because Bama has earned that caché. Bama would be the only team in the country that would be considered over a 1 loss conference champ. I don’t think Ohio State and Clemson would be able to get in over a 1 loss conference champ unless they happened to play and beat that team like for instance ND would have likely gone over Michigan if Michigan had won the Big 10.
December 18, 20187 yr Brian Kelly was asked if he was in favor of an expanded playoff and he resoundingly said yes. Of course Kelly wants it to expand. You know which coaches who have said they don’t want expansion: Saban, Dabo, and Urban. Gee, I wonder what separates Kelly from those 3 coaches besides a ring?

Maybe I just haven't read it or heard it. However, when did those 3 coaches you mention come out and say recently that they don't think their should be an expansion. Did they recently say that this year, or was it in years past?
