So back to my question, how is it bad for them to join a conference? It won't cost them money, are they afraid of the year in and year out grind of a conference schedule.

They're stuck with bad conference games that won't help them. I basically covered this in post #86.

Look, if you're (not you personally) an Irish hater, no matter what they do will appease you.

They seem to be doing fine now without being part of a conference.

They are doing fine because they went undefeated.

Should they have to be even now? Not if they have a better resume.

But they aren’t even. They are playing 12 games while the conference champ teams play 13 and recieve the benefit of being a conference champ. Something the committee explicitly states is a tie breaker between even teams.

We can argue about what "benefits the fans" means in this context, in this case, it means that Notre Dame essentially plays in a conference already by playing 5 ACC teams each year while retaining the freedom to schedule and play name programs like Michigan, Florida State, Stanford, and USC (all which are usually good) like they did this year. Win win in their eyes.

The deal ND has with the ACC only benefits the ACC. They get the resume booster if they beat ND and they aren’t hurt by losing to ND. ND on the other hand can’t lose to the ACC schools and still make the playoffs. It’s a raw deal for ND IMO.

I don't care what they do...just in the current model, this is just the second time they've been (national title) relevant since they ran Lou Holtz off in favor of Bob Davie.

 

I don't see a down side of playing an ACC or B1G schedule for them.

How many teams in the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or the Pac-12 haven't and won't likely anytime in the next decade or so make it to the playoffs? When will those teams be relevant? Seems being in a conference hasn't done much for them, yet look at the Irish...

I remember people complaining about Alabama's schedule here on BGP this year! Can't remember if you were one of them or not.

Yet they started out at #8 this year without being in a conference and just continued to climb toward that playoff spot. No conference was necessary. I like a team with the guts to control their own destiny.
