Notre Dame’s Independent status

Featured Replies

The deal ND has with the ACC only benefits the ACC. They get the resume booster if they beat ND and they aren’t hurt by losing to ND. ND on the other hand can’t lose to the ACC schools and still make the playoffs. It’s a raw deal for ND IMO.

Apparently, with that and the other teams they scheduled, they managed to get noticed enough to start in the top 10. Seems like it's helping them just fine.

How many teams in the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12 or the Pac-12 haven't and won't likely anytime in the next decade or so make it to the playoffs? When will those teams be relevant? Seems being in a conference hasn't done much for them, yet look at the Irish...

Well if Notre Dame fans are happy being relevant as often as conference also rans...then there is nothing else to say.

I'm not coming at this as a hater, ND is a top 10 brand in college football. As a huge college football fan, I'd like to see them be relevant more than once every 20 or so years.

I would too, but being in a conference won't guarantee that. The problem isn't the Independent Irish, it's the dumb playoff system.

Playoff system is fine, by in large from a completely neutral view they have got it right every year, even this year.

How do you know if only 4 teams play? Answer is you don't. If the Irish somehow win it all, a lot of you guys will complain and say they got it wrong.

I'm sure they could figure out a way to add Georgia Southern or The Citadel to their schedule to get a 13th game and make everybody happy, but I'm not sure what that would prove.

I mean if you want to get in a conversation about FCS games for Power 5 schools I’ll gladly agree with you. But you aren’t considering what that 13th game represents.

If you are trying to get me to say ND is a bad team I won’t because they aren’t.

But you’re ND. You have a brand like Ohio State and Alabama. Actually a bigger brand than Ohio State and Bama in a lot of people’s eyes. Yet ND is the only team that has to go undefeated to make the playoffs.

Nobody is saying ND doesn’t deserve to be in this year RTS.

Yet they started out at #8 this year without being in a conference and just continued to climb toward that playoff spot. No conference was necessary. I like a team with the guts to control their own destiny.

Spin it however you want. Having to go undefeated to make the playoffs is a risky tactic. Props to ND for having a great season this year. If they lose 1 game next year I hope they have fun in the Orange Bowl.

They're fine with it, I'm fine with it.

Oh, it's been said, not so much on here but it's been said.

Again, OSU lost one game. Where are they this year? Yep, Rose Bowl and out of the playoffs.

I won't say that. Alabama, Clemson and ND were undefeated...at the end of the day they deserve to be there. OU and OSU was a toss up but you can't get in over OU this year with that loss to Purdue.

If ND wins, they'll deserve to be called champs.
