Wintry Precipitation Possible Wednesday night into Thursday

Featured Replies

Some have a better chance to see some winter weather Wednesday night into the day on Thursday. Western Kentucky is looking some good snowfall totals. Those around the I-64 corridor could receive some freezing rain.

First the snow for Western Kentucky. The Weather Prediction Center has parts of Western Kentucky with a 40% chance to see at least 4 inches.

Both the GFS and NAM models are showing possible significant snow for Western Kentucky. They differ however on the totals. First, for the NAM, it is showing the possibility of 3-5 inches of snow. It is also showing the possibility of a dusting to 1 inch from around Elizabethtown to Lexington.

While the GFS is a little more robust with the possible snowfall accumulations. It is showing anywhere from 4-7 inches. Also, it is showing a wider area of light snow east of the heavy snow.

Now for the possible freezing rain. The NAM is showing a wide swath of possible freezing rain for most of Kentucky. Anywhere from .25 to around .50 of an inch. If this comes to past there could be some power outages

The GFS is showing less in possible freezing rain accumulations. Mainly around .10 of an inch.

This is a developing situation that I will be keeping a very close eye on. If this trend continues I fully expect the NWS to issue at least a Winter Weather Advisory by some time tomorrow. I will update this evening. Have a great day.

Here's the latest from both the NAM and GFS models. Western Kentucky is looking at anywhere from 2-5 inches of snow. The GFS has lowered its look at possible snowfall accumulations. It is showing 2-4 inches of snow. Accordingly, it is now showing more freezing rain accumulation. Totals for .10 to .40 inches of freezing rain accumulations.

The NAM model has upped its possible snow accumulations from 2-5 inches. It has also has increased its area for freezing rain accumulations. Anywhere from .02 to .40 inches of freezing rain totals.

The following chart will give everyone information on what could happen if we get the forecast freezing rain.

This is a rapidly developing situation. I will update in the morning or tonight if information changes.

Thanks for the information.

I already hate this winter. :lol2:

We still have a month of Fall left.:isurrender:

Although the Winter Storm Watch for western Kentucky has been downgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory that area should be on the lookout for some extreme conditions tonight into early Thursday morning. The area that should receive the snow has shrunk some. The latest NAM is showing the possibility of 2-5 inches of snow.

My concern is what the NAM is showing for possible freezing rain/ice accumulations. Some in western Kentucky could get upwards of .50 inch. I hope that doesn't happen. That will cause major problems.

The rest of Kentucky that receives the wintery precipitation looks to get very light if any snow. It looks to be mainly a rain/freezing rain event.

Here is the NAM simulated radar from 2 PM ET Wednesday to 11 AM Thursday morning.

I hope the freezing rain accumulations are lower than what is shown. Everyone who will be out tonight and early Thursday morning should be weather award.

Thanks for updates, will be checking in tonight as I head to cvg airport around 4:30 am tomorrow, keep us updated.

Those in western Kentucky and along the Tennessee border around the Bowling Green area need to be on the alert. According to the BGP Weather Central Radar. The freezing rain and snow maybe moving in earlier than expected.
