What Were The Colts Thinking?

Some of us had Houston in the contest, so there's a silver lining.

James Franklin thought it was a good decision.

One of the worst decisions I have ever seen by a NFL head coach.

Just this weekend we had the Louisville pass play, the run on fourth down by Penn State and now the Colts. Just unbelievable calls made by coaches who have been around the game for years.

It's simply one of those calls, if it works and they win people talk about what a great call it was. Similar to the call by Philly in the super bowl going for the touchdown instead of a field goal by running a trick play. Most coaches take the field goal there. If they dont get that, people are saying he is an idiot and one of the worst decisions in super bowl history. However since it worked everyone talks about how great of a call and play it was.

It's the chance coaches take when they make tough calls. Especially calls that go against the normal expected safe calls. If it works your a genius, if it doesnt your an idiot.

He obviously was following Herman Edward's words of you play to win the game (not tie).

Frank Reich is going to get killed for this decision, but Mike Vrabel is getting praised for his decision. High risk, high reward. I don’t have an issue with the decision as long as you have a play you are confident in.

The situations were totally different.

Agreed. If it worked, people would be saying what a great, confident, aggressive decision. People would be saying we wish Marvin would be like that. However when it doesnt work they are an idiot. Most of the best decisions in history would have looked idiotic if it didn't work.

Only comparison I can make is Bill Belichick going for it against the Colts ten years ago or so. He had at least had the cache... and Tom Brady.

The situations were totally different.

Different yes, but it takes the same stones to make either decision.

Big difference between being aggressive and being dumb.

Once again it all comes down to if it works or not with how people view it. If the Philly Special gets blown up in the super bowl. People would have been saying how dumb could you be for one not kicking the field goal, and two doing a trick play in that situation. That would have been considered dumb and not aggressive if it didnt work. Yet it did work and was a big reason why they won.

Same thing in this game. People would be saying much different things right now.

While I understand what you're saying with regards to results being the determining factor on how things are looked at...I'll disagree with you in comparing this play to the Philly Special. The coach has to be aware of the time and situation in these instances. The Philly Special, or the Saints onside kick to start the second half in the Super Bowl can both be called gutsy...but, even if they failed, both teams had time to recover. Reich didn't have that luxury today. You do that at the end of the first half and have the same results, and it's a non-story (comparatively).
