Severe Weather Alert Day

I'm issuing a Severe Weather Alert Day, especially for Western Kentucky. The threat for strong to severe storms has increased. The Storm Prediction Center has raised the threat level for parts of Western Kentucky to an Enhanced Risk Area for strong to severe storms.

The Slight Risk Area has been expanded to just east of the I-75 corridor. The rest of Kentucky is in a Marginal Risk area. The chart below will explain each category.

The strongest storms could produce damaging winds large hail and a couple of tornadoes some of which could be strong. The possible tornadoes could reach EF-3 in strength.

The timing looks to be between 5-9 pm for the strongest storms for Western Kentucky. South Central Kentucky could see some strong to severe storms during the afternoon. These should clear out by early evening. The strongest storms will then move into the Western Kentucky area during the time I mentioned above. These storms will weaken as they move eastward across Kentucky. Then it seems another batch of storms will form and effect North Central, Central and the Cincinnati/NKY area during the early morning hours on Friday. The following are two radars showing these possible storms. The first is the NAM simulated radar.

This next one is the NAM4km radar which is a high definition radar.

This is the EHI from the NAM that shows the energy in the atmosphere for the formation of severe storms. Notice around 8 pm EDT. Western Kentucky should keep an eye to the sky. Everyone should have some way of getting notification of storm warnings later today.

I will update later this afternoon. Be weather alert today.

We just had about 20 minutes of HARD wind blowing, and about 5 minutes of downpour in Louisville. Now it's pretty quiet aside for some occasional thunder.

Got nasty in Alexandria in a hurry. Power keeps going on and off. Rare for here.

My daughter narrowly missed running full on into a fallen tree on Dixie Highway near West Point around 2 today. She did wind up with a branch lodged under her car. She called me, so I left work. As I was driving through Patoka Lake, there was an over turned pontoon boat. I tried to call 911 but there was no service. There were several cars and trucks stopped, so I went on to try and get to my daughter. Passed an emergency vehicle headed toward the lake so I am hopeful everyone got out safely. Been trying to find out all afternoon.

It got pretty nasty for a while here in Southwestern Franklin County. I spent the evening and will spend the morning removing fallen trees and repairing fencing damaged by the trees. I am fortunate my horses weren't running loose as one section lost the top three boards. The horses were content to chew on the fallen tree leaves, however, I believe they were plotting their escape.

Glad your daughter is okay.

Lots of significant tree damage in Latonia and Covington as I drove into work this morning.

I was sitting facing north on 17 at the connector (road johnnys toys was on) at the stoplight when the wind hit about 4:00 and have never felt anything like that in a car. I literally thought my pickup was being pushed forward. I know it was straight line winds and not a tornado, but if you've seen videos where people were very close to one when it came through, that's what it looked like. Leaves and things blowing around like crazy, the trees whipping like crazy and the rain going sideways and turning white. Lasted about 5 seconds.
