Maybe. But poor parenting isn’t unique to this generation. Poor parenting has always existed.

His parents probably grew up with pong, not call of duty, halo, destiny, fortnight, etc.

I'm not saying it's the only reason. Actions like these have several layers. But parenting is at the top of the list, IMO, followed closely by peer pressure and bullying.

And I'm not saying poor parenting plays no role either. However, I've seen too many kids over the years become productive adults, despite growing up in terrible situations. You also see kids who have great parents ending up as horrible people. It's really easy to blame parents in these situation, but as you say, there has to be way more to it. If parenting were even at the top of the list, it would be much easier to predict how kids would ultimately turn out.

I agree with you on the video games. The desensitizing of kids.

Which is likely caused by lack of parental guidance.

 

Sometimes the kids just hate any authority. It’s not always the parents fault. I see plenty of kids with good, caring, parents that are just little punks.

Very very true. I have seen kids this mimic some kind of oppositional defiance. And a sibling from same parents who is kind and respectful.

I've never bought into the Video Game theory of why kids do violent acts. Millions and millions of kids and young adults have grown up playing video games and out of that only a miniscule amount have participated in mass violence such as a school shooting. I remember in the 70's when Road Runner and Coyote were taken off of TV for being too violent...just when I was about to order that ACME Rocket kit too.

 

People that carry out these acts are just wired differently than the rest of us. Maybe the games embolden them and gloirifies the shooting and killing to them...to the rest of us it's just a game, as we don't look at them that way.

Video games have completely changed over the past 20+ years.

Couldn’t agree more. Violent forms of play have always existed, especially amongst young boys. I think like a lot things mentioned, they are a convenient excuse. Besides violence, video games also require lots of critical thinking, problem solving, and things like resource management, and fine motor skills. Yet we don’t even mention video games when kids display these skills.

Sorry, guys, I ain't buying this video game theory.

 

After GTA, we would see a massive amount of car thefts.

After Call of Duty, we would see enlistment through the roof.

After Minecraft, the world would be covered with blocks.

I don't buy the Church argument either. Over the course of history, plenty of awful things have been done in the name of religion and the Church. And there are plenty of people over the years that attended Church who aren't exactly moral leaders. Simply attending Church won't even come close to solving the issue.

 

I also don't buy the "kids would rather shoot someone than fight" argument either. Spending much of my time around schools over the last decade as a coach, I've seen and heard about plenty of fights, but haven't seen anyone get shot. The categorizing of today's youth as morally bankrupt, lazy, troubled people is so far from the actual truth. Yes, there are bad apples, and quite honestly, there always have been.
